Door lock mechanism with manual key not working, with remote fine

Apologies if you've heard this one before, a search didn't reveal anything specific.

Central locking with both keys all works fine, locks and unlocks the doors as they should. Issue is with the driver's (off side UK) door, when I put the key in (to simulate a flat fob battery for example), and turn it, it doesn't either lock or unlock the internal mechanism. So I'm locked out if I find myself with a lost or dead fob. It feels like there's resistance and not right. It clicks, sort of, but not as it should.

Some googling later, I found someone saying that the release rod actuator is displaced, take the door card off and do it from there. So I tried that, but I didn't have any success. The only rod I can see looks like it's fine, but I'm not exactly sure what it is I should be looking for. (Took some pictures)

Not a huge issue, but I don't fancy being stuck locked out. Any ideas appreciated.

Hiya Rob I think this post might help you out:

Door lock open with key

It sounds the same issue as another lad had on here. 90% of the tone it’s the plastic blade that operates the lock hasn’t been put back in properly.

Hope that helps

Hi mate, yeah that sounds exactly the same. I'll post a reply there :icon thumright:

Too be honest bud I covered it in there but if you can drop the lock out and then turn the key so you can confirm where the blade is then locate that first before reassembling you’ll probably sort it in about 15 minutes and 10 of those would be flicking the clip back over on the door handle rod as they’re a nightmare.

But yeah you’ll find that someone’s had the lock out and just missed it putting it back in. When I was at Audi I had a brand new A1 do this exact thing and that was before it’s very first owner got the keys lol.

Thanks mate, I'm sure it's obvious once it's done but just so I'm clear when you say "drop the lock out" I take it you mean the mechanism below and separate from the handle (where the key goes in)?

Still have this problem. I've had the door card a couple of times to have a look, but I can't dismantle the handle/barrel mechanism - there's something in the way that I can't remove, a black plastic cover over the part where the barrel is. I've removed the lower lock, the part that latches when the door closes, to get better access, but still I can't reach what I need to, and I don't want to start breaking things through frustration (I know myself). I took a video of the problem, should hopefully explain it better:
