Does the standard exhaust pop and crackle?

    Hi all

Off to see a 66 plate RS3 next week which I think has the standard exhaust.
Most of the Youtube vids I see all had the sports exhaust but how does the standard exhaust sound?
Is it loud (when you want it to be) and does it crackle and pop on lift off / downchange?

It will still sound very good. I would really try to find one with the sports exhaust, though. The noise is such a big part of the car that you want to enjoy it to it’s full.

    Thanks D0C.

Theres hardly used close to me and this one has a good spec aside from the exhaust.
Can the sports exhaust be retro fitted easy enoughand if so, what sort of price are they from a dealer?

    I have standard exhaust.
I found sports a bit too loud for the money.

Yes standard still has some noise and pops and crackles .
I didn't find it a load different to the sports

Yes. Can be retro fitted easily enough. Bank on £1000 but the real problem is finding one!

You can pick one up brand new from a dealer for £1400, or I can direct you to my old one which was no use for the new owner for £650.

You absolutely need the sports exhaust, these cars aren’t the same without. I always thought the mapping was slightly different for more pops and bangs on the PFL when you had the sports system.

I'll bear your exhaust in mind if I get the RS3. Need to get a good trade-in for my M3 first :)

I sold it to a guy in Leicester who thought it would fix an issue of his but it didn’t, so it’s back up for sale in as new condition.

Why the change from the M3? Lovely car but at least worn the RS you will be able to use all of the power all of the time ;)

You have to look at where they are coming from though, some really really dodgy sellers and I would rather dig for another £200 than buy from scum and fuel car theft.

Yeah that pretty much sums things up :)
M3 is super fast (and pretty violent at times!) but you can only really use it properly when conditions are dry and warm-ish.
Its a big car though so want something a little smaller as we have another family car.
Keen to hear what the RS3 sounds like as looks and sounds are the 2 key things for me.
They seem to hold value very well too and are a rarer car as theres very little for sale within 50 miles of me.
A 3 year old RS3 isn't much less than the trade in on my 18 month high spec comp pack M3 with similar miles

There was a time when secondhand sports exhausts were rarer than hens teeth. As @AudiNutta says, you have to question where they are coming from!

That’s fair enough, you definitely can use the power from the RS3 whenever you like... It’s so hard to unsettle it, planted isn’t the word.

The RS3’s sound amazing to be fair, such a unique exhaust note... there is very little on the road that compares as an overall package. You do see them about, but it is rare and definitely not on a weekly basis let alone daily. Maybe see one or two a month, depending on how far I drive.

It is crazy how the value plummets in the BMW’s, I put it down to the high price to start with though.. the RS6’s have a pretty brutal drop initially especially if you’ve spec’d beyond £100k.

Very true, I thought mine would sell rapid but it didn’t.

The market has been ruined by people selling them for literally £200, ones that look like they’ve been dragged from underneath a car. I’ve sent messages before and asked why they are selling them “because I put food on my plate” “I sell because no longer have car”... ok so you sold the car without an exhaust? 85% of the sellers who list them dirt cheap, can’t speak a tidy word of English.

I was interested in one for around £450, it sold and I asked the guy to let me know if it didn’t go through. He asked how much I’d be willing to pay, so told him the same £450 and he said “will get back to you”. 24 hours later had a message saying he can “get me one” for £450.... how much clearer could that be? That was being sold in Heathrow, I bet they would have gone and dropped it off the bottom of a car.

Tempting to buy one, but what if it’s your car next that they take? All for a couple hundred quid which is nice to have, but not at the cost of people’s homes being torn apart and cars taken.

    Apologises, I’ve babbled on again.

Exhausted stolen to order, it’s mental.. can’t relax at all.

I won’t go into details but I did have a very detailed dream a few nights ago my car was getting stolen, scary stuff I’ve been on edge ever since.

It’s wrong that we have to worry like this.

Yep, it is scary that these low life scumbags get away with this. No deterrent in the UK anymore and probably going to get worse.

I like the American way, ‘shoot first, ask questions later’ just my opinion of course.

So is the sports exhaust a straight swap from the standard one?
IE: theres no ECU changes or anything else?

Can you remember what Audi were charging when spec'd instead of the standard exhaust? Was it £1400?

I downloaded the 2016 price pdf and yes, it was around 1400 for the dynamic pack.

Went to see it today and took it for good test drive. Standard exhaust sounded ok on start up and on idle but a little disappointing when driving :(
Oddly, it has the magnetic suspension which is half the dynamic pack but not the exhaust.

They actually had another PFL RS3 that wasn't yet for sale but had the sports exhaust so sales guy took me to see it in their compound and started/revved it... and wow!!
What a difference and having the option of putting in a quiter mode was great.
Managed to do a deal on the car and they are supplying and fitting a sports exhaust for me in time for collection hopefully this week :)

Could be an early Audi showcase / dealer car, they came with weird specs, magride but no sports exhaust and vice versa.

For the FL it was £1000 for the exhaust and £1000 for magnetic ride, then later on they brought out a pack for £1500 I think and I missed this because my build was locked in.

Yeah and all of them had the 174mph option, the £1600 option for a software patch :lmfao:

They didn’t miss an opportunity there did they.

My PFL car has the magride but no exhaust which as you say together completes the Dynamic pack.

I love the sports exhaust I have sourced and in comfort is fairly quiet for leaving home etc.

One more question while I wait for my car...

On cold start, can you make it quieter/louder by selecting modes with the sport exhaust?
A quieter mode would be good as my M3 was very loud with with no option of quieting it down on a cold start for the first 30 secs or so. Not ideal on early mornings.

By default they are in the quietest mode when started up cold, can’t change that unless you unplug the valves in the open position.

You need a controller to have them quiet on cold start

Pfl is really noisy when starting from cold for about 30 seconds.
Starts on fast idle and then works the flaps 2 or 3 times.
The engine is noisier as it does a catalyst warm up phase.
I have a valve controller so I have my cold starts a little quieter by keeping the valves closed.
Best see how you find it as it may be quieter than your used to.
Warm starts have a nice crack on startup which adds to the experience
