Do the TDI CR engines suffer any of the PD engine problems? Looking at buying CR or 1.8tfsi

Hi all,

Looking at getting the girlfriend a new motor and I'm well aware of the PD140 tdi problems.

Struggling to find answers on Google and was wondering if the new CR140 engines suffer the same chocolate turbos that the PD had? Have the CR's developed any more problems overtime since they've been out a little while now, except the emissions scandal obviously but who really cares about that.

Also looking at a 1.8tfsi and would appreciate any input on that too

Thanks

Diesels only really make sense if you're doing >10k miles a year imo.
My brother recently bought a 1.8tfsi black edition. Very smooth and refined and pulls well. They go like stink after a remap too. There however has been issues with high oil consumption on the 1.8 and 2.0 tfsi engines due to the manufacturing method of the piston rings I believe. Try a search on the topic.

My pal has a Ibiza 1.6 TDI CR FR and his boost pipes are like fat person jeans. Tearing and splitting had to upgrade them as he had been through 3 in 6 months.

No known, specific issues with the post-2010 2.0 TDI (CR) engines

The CR engines are much better than the PD, a lot less problems.

If you do get a CR might be worth getting one that is 2011-2012 as the early CR engines 2008-2010 suffer with the oil pump balance shaft, where the hex key (77mm) would wear to an extend that you would lose oil pressure. I have had the revised balance shaft (100mm hex key) one on mine on Wednesday to eliminate/pro-long that problem.

Yeah if it was for me I'd be buying a petrol as the diesel doesn't make sense what with the extra buying cost. Am aware of the oil consumption as got it with my s3 that drinks it like it's going out of fashion.

How bigger problem is the balance shaft issue, as you don't see many threads about the problem like you used to with the chocolate turbos on the pd

Aren't diesels supposed to be dropping in price due to all the government announcements?

How many miles will she be doing? Any motorway miles? Asking this because of the DPF, it will need to do a regeneration every month or so and if that doesn't get done it can cause problems.

See below, there are also more threads on vwaudiforum etc. its worth getting checked if you buy a CR if it has the 77mm.

Yes but you can pick up an older 1.8Tfsi from 2004 onwards whereas if your opting for a CR Tdi then you've got to be looking at 2008 onwards cars which is where the extra expense is.

Thanks for that will look into it, Not enough miles to warrant a diesel in my opinion, about 7k a year and most of its stop start which is a big no no for the dpf however it can always be gutted to save that problem. She's never driven petrol before see hence the reason for looking into the diesel.

Any more opinions on the 1.8tfsi?

I know it's not one that's usually in the limelight as people prefer the 2.0T

Definitely go for petrol if she is only going to do 7k miles a year.

I have a 2010 plate 2.0 CR 170bhp CBBB engine.
It now has 233,000 miles on the clock, I have owned it for 5 years.

Only thing I have had to replace was the flap runner motor at about 180,000 miles, cost £250
Changed four sensors myself, that's about it.

Same turbo, EGR valve, DPF, clutch and no Hex problems.
Drive it like diesels should be, long distance and plenty of beans.

I just look after it and change the oil every 5000 to 8000.
Just don't leave it in there, for the cost its daft!

But at 7000 per year, I would go petrol.
But I've done 190,000 of those 233,000 miles and ****** loved it!!
