Hi All

I have a 2012 with 7 speed s tronic. For months I thought I was having engine issues because the car would feel more lumpy and have less power sometimes but after checking everything I think it may be the transmission.

no faults what so ever and have also tried calibrating clutches etc.

symptoms are :
Car will jerk forward or back when in D or R from a standstill and when brake released. Can even see the Rpm drop and recover.

at about 75-80kmh the gears keep changing between 6 and 7 depending if I take my foot off the accelerator it will go to 7 and the moment I touch the pedal jumps to 6 and so on.....

In general the car feels like it’s towing a caravan and is really noticeable in slow rpms feels like it’s dragging and you can hear the engine working harder. The acceleration is affected too doesn’t go like it should when I floor it.

however it’s really intermittent. 2 out of 10 starts and the car is as smooth as a peach and the gears change perfectly.

Any ideas ?.
I thought mechatronic but I thought these things just fail and won’t be intermittent ?.

software or ecu ?.

any help would be great.

Thanks in Advance

Has the gearbox been serviced?

I was at a transmission specialist and he mentioned that the clutches are prone to go. Don't know how much truth there is in there? I've got an issue with my injectors which is causing a vibrating on idle but haven't noticed any power loss.

Many thanks for the reply

yeah, oil and filters changed every 35,000kms.
I even got a software update from Audi but that didn’t help. They say theirs nothing wrong but I can feel the difference like night and day when it runs smooth and rough. I can almost feel jolts between gear changes when it’s rough and don’t even notice the changes when it’s smooth. Engine also runs quieter when it’s ok.

may install the mechatronic repair kit just for the sake of it.

I've had the plastic filter housing fail, allowing oil to leak from the gearbox, which resulted in some of the symptoms you experience. Clunky changes, hunting through the box. The dealer was certain at first it was the Mechatronic unit, but inspection revealed low oil level in the box as a result of the leak. Also never had any sign of a leak from where the car is parked. The box now performs well after new housing and filters, fresh oil and software reset.

Thanks John

were you getting intermittent symptoms?. Some days smooth as silk and others rough as old nails ?.

Not really. Mine went virtually all at once and the car had to taken to a dealer on a flat-bed truck. I knew very little about auto gearboxes before my episode and now I know there is a hydraulic system for changing gear which needs oil and consequently a pump to pressure the mechatronic system.

The strange thing is that when I run engagement point adaptation with VCDS the gearbox then runs as smooth as silk and changes gear when it’s supposed to. But after a few days when it has runs through the different calibration steps it goes back to being a bag of nails.

VCDS cannot complete the procedure 100%. There is more to a gearbox calibration than just a basic settings. You need a guided drive as well.
