difficulty selecting gears

I'm having difficulty selecting gears when stationary. First and reverse are especially bad, the problem lessens when I'm moving slighty. I have to force it in when stationary and it seems to be getting progressively worse.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be and whether its an expensive one?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your clutch isn't disengaging completely.

If it's a hydraulic clutch then it could be as simple as a fluid change or bleed to fix.

If it's a cable clutch the automatic adjuster may have siezed although I think that usually causes slippage rather than what you're seeing.

It could be something with the actual clutch mechanism but I'm not very knowledgible on those.

Not sure what my clutch is, its a 2002 A4 1.8t Quattro?
