Difference between SE and Sport

hiya.

Im after an A3 2.0tdi around a 53 plate. Can anyone tell me the difference between the SE and Sport. I originally wanted a Sport, but now i'm not sure why.

Please help!!

sport suspension, se is too bouncy, 17" rims, 16" in Se i think, fog lights on sport, sport seats, steering wheel is 3 spoke SE is 4 spoke, interior is usually pitch piano in sports and walnut in SE trim, prob a few more but i cant remeber now

I have just bought a SE I researched the difference but forgot about the Drivers information system not fitted on SE

Go for the Sport if you can. You get more for similar money.

Didn't know the SE didn't have DIS... I couldn't survive without my DIS..

A lot depends on what the original owner ordered. Ever since my last 1.8T Sport I have always had the SE model, mainly because I prefer the slightly softer suspension and the ordinary seats. But I have always added some of the items that are standard on the Sport. For example I always included the front fog lights and DIS. I did this with my new 2004 and 2007 models.

The SE used to come with extra things that were not standard on the Sport including:
17" 7.5J wheels with 225/45 tyres
Auto-dimming rear view mirror,
Cruise control,
Front centre armrest,
Luggage pack,
Interior lighting pack,
Light and rain sensor pack,
Storage pack.

The SE and Sport used to be the same price and you just chose which you preferred.

For the 2009 Model year Audi UK decided to remove a lot of these items and reduced the price accordingly.

When I ordered my latest 2009 Sportback in SE trim I just added back most of the items that had been deleted and the price worked out about the same. The current spec for an SE now includes the Front fog lamps and the DIS as standard but 16"x 6.5J alloys so I had to order the optional 17" alloys. The current spec always does not include air-conditioning on the SE so that's another item to add to the options list.

It depends when there were purchased. My 2004 SE came with 16" alloys as standard. My 2007 SE came with 17" as standard and my current 2009 model is back to 16" as standard. In each case where it has come with 16" alloys I purchased the option of 17" alloys. The Sport has always come with 17" alloys. Audi do tend to change the spec of the SE around a bit. If anyone wants to know what the standard spec for any 8P from August 2003 to the present, I have PDF copies of all the Pricing and Specification Guides.

Which wheels did the Sport have?

When I bought my 2007 SE model, it came with 17"x7.5J '16-spoke' design and the Sport came with 17" x 7.5J '5-spoke design'. Both had 225/45 tyres. The current SE has 16" x 6.5J alloys with 205/55 tyres as standard but there is an option (which I have) to go to the 17" x 7.5J alloys with 225/45 tyres. The current Sport come with 17" alloys and 225/45 tyres.

From your list the items that would have been added options on a 2003 model were the 17" wheels, the Bi-Xenons, heated seats, Bose and the Walnut trim. All the rest were standard SE spec.

I tend to order my A3s with quite a few extras so I'm sure they are quite a good buy for the second owner.

Thanks mate, Ii forgot to mention it came with rear parking sensors and that auto dim mirror aswell as climate control.

I had look through my receipts to see if I could price any extra's. Cant see any apart from the original buyers receipt for £18500, Ive no idea how much a standard SE came in at.

That's correct for the current model range. But up until the 2009 Model Year the SE and the Sport were the same price but with different standard equipment. From the 2009 Model Year Audi UK reduced the price of the SE and gave it less 'goodies' as standard but included the DIS and Front Fogs as standard.

On the SE spec the 'driver's information system' is highlighted in blue and shows a price, which means it's an optional extra and not standard.
On the sport it says 'standard.

DIS HAS been standard in the SE & SPORT for a while now. Not being funny here but the AUDI Web site model detail & configue option does sometimes leave a lot to be desired. Best place to confirm exact details is to look at the actual Price & Spec guide from the showroom but this is also on the Web site to download - up to date versions are always on the site before hitting the dealers as well. Just looking at the hard copy in front of me ( OCT 09 ) and DIS is there on SE. DEC 09 guide via the download shows the same.

The OP wants to know the differences between an SE and a Sport, pre-facelift, the first 8P, year 2003/2004.

There could be some differences between the factory standard SE spec and one he could buy second hand because, as pointed out, the person who originally spec'd the car could've gone for some extras. Same for the Sport.
But in it's standard form, so a "worst case scenario", the minimum spec is what would be helpful to the OP. That way he will know the least he will get on both trims.

Looking at the spec's found on the Parkers website, both are accurate as far as the standard spec for both trims, with no optional extras added.

DIS stands for Driver Information System. It is the system that provides the small screen between the Speedo and Rev Counter and includes the computer which gives things like overall mpg, range etc. The exact amount of information and functions on the DIS varies according to the age of the model. There is more available on the latter models than on the earlier models.

h5djr is correct, until the latest models the base model could be raised to either SE or Sport for about 2 grand (price and details from around 2006 model):

Both have Electronic Climate control and the Concert single CD player

The S line was an addition to the Sport trim.

I think you may be able to enable the Driver Information System (DIS) on the SE using VAGCOM if you have a DSG box.

I don't know if trim levels are different in South Africa, but mine and a mate's '04 2.0TDI SEs both have three-spoke steering wheel, DIS and fogs.

I think they must have been, because all three were extras on the UK spec in 2004. My 2004 SE did come with a three-spoke steering wheel but that was only because it had a DSG gearbox with the steering wheel mounted paddles.

What year and engine is your A3 - I've got the wiper stalk and a used cluster that I never got around to fitting in my old A3...
