Diesel accelerator pedal question

This might be just me but it feels that I get faster acceleration by not flooring the car, but by firmly pressing the pedal in a smooth motion. I've have the 150 tdi.

If this is right how does this work?

I have just come from a Petrol so I'm still getting accustomed to the characteristics of the car.

Could be down to the software - the throttle is electronic and no longer a cable going directly to the card like in the 'good ol days' LoL !!
