Dead P-Zero’s

Free if <2000 mile.
Well I burst the front left tyre (pothole) on my brand new FL RS3 on the day of collection. Car got recovered back to local Audi dealer where I ordered and purchased the car, they immediately ordered a new tyre.
I asked about an alignment check and inspection of front suspension but got told it will cost £200.

I could not believe they had the front to try and charge me for an inspection & alignment considering I had just handed over >£50,000 for the new RS3.
They carried out a basic visual check but would NOT do alignment without full payment, needless I told them to poke it and walked out.

Audi dealers don’t you just HATE them

Wow, that is really unbelievable! On the day of collection and they still want to charge £200, I would have gone mad and demanded to speak to dealer principal. I must be lucky with my dealer (TETBURY) as they have always gone the extra mile

Yeah, they do a Free alignment IF... there is no visible damage that you've hit anything. Its for cases where the car may pull in one direction or steering wheel is off centre etc or a slight misalignment from factory.

As tough as it sounds in your circumstance, Its not really the dealers fault if you smash a pot hole and burst your tyre no matter how soon after collection it occurs. Its a real bummer for sure but see it from their point of view, where do they draw the line? I have heard of people succesfully claiming from the local council for such documented damage resulting from potholes. Make sure you take a dated photo of the pot hole and any evidence of recovery and resulting damage and associated invoices!

I'd thoroughly recommend taking it somewhere to have your alignment done asap after such a large whack or you'll lose half your tyre life and car will not handle properly.

The RO 1 ,s which I now have on the rear do have a “rim protection “ strip on the side wall , it just doesn’t look as prounounced as on the ro2 that the car came with. Theirs not much in it in size , I think it’s been made more a design feature on the ro2 . In other respects it’s the same. When I ordered it it was just listed as Audi approved Pirelli sport didn’t see an option of different types, but now I know. Like you that extended sidewall has saved me on a couple of occasions I did think it was somewhat of a gimmick but in the real world it seems to work so I’m sticking with them .
Thanks for the info hope you get suitable resolution for the uneven wear situation.

Are the R02 that come on the FL still available ? On Pirelli website they seem to be listed as Pirelli P Zero SC R02 without the significant rim protector bar.

The tyres turned up this morning, overnight from Pirelli in France :)

Had a quick look and they seem fine to me, are stamped R02, have the same wall and have the sound deadening inside.

To be fair, one significant pot hole can effect your geometry settings, then it needs re-setting. I dont know what your roads are like but in Newcastle/ Northumberland, they are impossible to avoid as they're everywhere. Had my car re-aligned at least 10 times in 2.5years.

Yes correct, but the likelihood of both front tyres being equally knocked out of kilter for this wear to be identical is slim.

This will IMO is a alignment issue, pure and simple. I have spacers, and different offsets resulting in a total widening of the track of around 13mm all round. Zero issues and well over 23k on my front RO2 P-Zero's. Wear was very even across the tread. Recently replaced the fronts and also had alignment re-done as the roads are so bad here.

Many so called 4 wheel alignment centers are not skilled enough to unbolt the subframe and equalise the camber, and balance the castor. Atec Align in Huddersfield is a legend and all the local dealerships use him including the VAG groups. Awesome Gti also have a new Hunter system, and did an excellent job last time I had suspension work done.

The RO2 spec tyres have the big rim protectors. They superseded the RO1. The AO is also an Audi spec but not for the RS3, and may not have the big rim protectors.

Thanks very much for your input.

I am taking my original alignment printout down with me, compare it to the settings it has on it now. If they put it on and they say they are well out but the same as they were set 5k ago, I will be asking for money to the tyres.

I will mention the unbolting of the subframe to do it properly, believe me this place is more than capable of doing that.. they build track cars, extreme performance Japanese cars.

The AO tyre is what is on the S3, I had them fitted later on as mine came with Continentals. They do have a decent rim protector, but is so slight side by side with the RS3.

I am facing the exact same situation !!! My pirellis look the exact same with 9000 miles on ... i am tempted to try some nexen n fera su1 to finish the summer season ...

Nightmare isn't it! Wouldn't be so bad if the tread was worn sufficiently.
Hm, can't comment on that particular model of Nexen but aren't they mediocre tyres?.. 400bhp car?..

A company called Mister Auto, very decent price too when you compare to Audi wanting £295 each :lmfao:

Ordered 16:00 on Friday, were due to dispatch Monday but finally got on the move at 05:00 Tuesday, arrived 10am this morning. Apparently these tyres come direct from Pirelli, all I know is that they started off in France.

Jeez @AudiNutta any chance you can try condensing your replies down to a few lines for those of us with limited time to catch up on ASN?!

Good price but they dont list the 235/35 size in R02 spec .

Oh that’s rubbish, I haven’t looked.

I wouldn’t normally use this site but Camskill, this time it just came down to the quickest delivery as we are going away to West Wales on Friday and I had to try and get the car sorted for then.

Love your throughly informative posts AN. Keep it up!

Regarding the tyre issues, I think you've had a bad run of luck and there is /was something defo wrong with the set up, a knock, or more likely something someone done to offset both sides of the car.
We both have similar set ups i.e spacers and staggered set up but my tyres are fine.

Hope the new tyres and realignment get it sorted.

Enjoy !

I’ve been in work for the past 5 days on 12 hour shifts, so I’ve only been on here every couple of days and subsequently had a fair few posts to reply to in one go. I don’t want to ignore anybody’s post, so I try to reply to them all but end up cluttering the thread.. my bad.

Yes I always have bad luck, I won’t be as bothered as long as it is sorted.. one of those things. Fingers crossed on Friday the alignment is way out and we will know that’s done it. On a plus note the new tyres look great, meaty haha!.. still would rather the £350 in the bank though ;)

Thank you!

Can’t wait to get driving again. Brought it out of the garage today and took it half a mile to work, but otherwise it hasn’t moved. My usual 4 days in work is enough for me to get excited to bring it out of the garage, such a great car... always makes me smile. It might sound silly but after a few days in a factory, sitting in the car is such a nice place to be. Wheels are coming off today (Thursday) and being taken to have tyres swapped (not chancing it to drive), then alignment at 9am Friday.. roll on!! :racer:

Yes correct, but the likelihood of both front tyres being equally knocked out of kilter for this wear to be identical is slim.

If you whack one wheel and it bends the track rod slightly which can shorten or lengthen it and thus put you tracking out, you wont only get one trye scrubbing. It will equalize across the steering rack, meaning when you try and go straight ahead, both tyres will scrub with you steering wheel being ever so out of dead true which you wouldn't even notice unless you really scrutinized.

Tyres are on! With great difficulty I’ve refrained from driving it until the alignment tomorrow.

On the off-chance, does anybody have any wheel alignment results to compare to mine?

Note that mine were a lot worse than the before readings, but there was an issue with the computer at the time so the before readings are half way through the alignment.

@T-800 might be anle to help? I think he has recently had an Hunter alignment completed. He is however running 8mm spacers all round and Eibach Pros.

Correct Jim

However I’m not 100% with mine so it’s going in today to a different alignment specialist to address my concerns.

When I had mine done after the springs I was told everything was ‘in’ tolerance, however after a discussion I’m getting it redone.

After results. Had this done to realign my off centre steering wheel and fit my summer wheels. Hope this helps Matt.

This was mine after having the Eibach Pro kit fitted and I have 12mm spacers all around...

On the front left they couldn’t move the subframe anymore to get it in the green but it’s on the exact limit of Audi specs.

Thanks very much all for your posts, I appreciate your help and those who have posted their print outs.

So there was nothing wrong with the alignment, 0.1mm out at most on the Toe. I notice all of the alignments you’ve posted use degrees but the place that did mine seem to use millimetres. As a conversion, 0.05degrees is 0.88mm so very comparable to what mine was.

Based on there not being an issue with mine, I’ve got them to add an extra 0.5mm toe onto each wheel and they said go back in 1000 miles and they will see if they are scrubbing but otherwise it can only be the spacers apparently?

The caster angle as you can see is badly out, but they said this can’t be adjusted. They showed me on the computer when they went to look for instructions how to alter it, it said the manufacturer doesn’t offer an adjustment for this. Is this correct? If I took the spacers off could I get Audi to do an alignment and sort the caster angle?

Thanks again

Michelin PS4s
Same. I love the rim protection idea on pzero but dont trust them now after a few buldges and weird wear
Shame I've not seen PS4S upcloee as its description says deep rim protection.

Black circles has £15 off 2 /£40 off 4 at £210 fitted for 255 size. Plus 2% quidco

Michelin website also offering £40 cashback when buying from some dealers

Tyre plus site has them at £200 fitted at kwikfit

Feel free anyone to post better deals for us :)

Think I'm doing 2 fronts just now

Guys beware of traction issues with MPS4’s! @Callump01 has experienced some of this!

I will be writing up a new thread in the next few days when I get time, but I’ve had a full inspection of my tyres by Pirelli and made the 340 mile round trip on Friday up to their performance centre in Burton on Trent. This is an issue with the cars not the tyres and to get it sorted, it’s looking like I’m going to have to start a battle with Audi and the more of us that join the better chance we have of getting it sorted. Very slim chances of it being sorted because it would require a mechanical alteration to each and every car, these cars will just be plagued with this issue more than likely.

There isn’t any deep kerb protection, they sit just proud of the alloy as @Callump01 will back up, I’ve seen his in person.

If you change just the two fronts I’d say you’re even more likely to suffer from the traction issues they have?

Whsts your quick summary of traction issues? The gold rated evo award tyres have bad grip? Or traction control system issue for dome reason.

Audi say it's not the car and pirelli say it's not the tyre. No real surprise in blane game companies.

What Psi do you run the tyres at? Do we think it's just the 255 size with issue? Or just fronts maybe?

I did an impromptu survey re mps4s traction issues on a Australian forum. The consensus seems to be no traction control issues if you run a square set up.

On the pirelli inner edge wear issue, quite a few have also reported the problem over here. However many cars that have switched to other brands of tyre haven’t had the premature wear issue, so that seems to suggest that tyres also may be contributing to the problem.

I wonder if the staggered set up may also be playing a role in the problem. Will be keen to see your findings.

Well speak to the owners, don’t listen to the people reviewing the tyres because was it on an RS3? Quite a few people have suffered from the traction issue now, I’m just making people aware before you spend several hundred on what is potentially a problem.

There is a clear issue with the car by the looks of it, turn your car to a hard lock and look at the wheel turning most. So turn hard left, the right hand side tyre is barely on the ground and the left hand is nearly on the tyre wall, you can’t see the tyre wall on a hard lock. I’ve seen my old tyres cut up and Pirelli have explained why it’s not an issue with the structure of the tyre, I will copy my report onto my thread.

I used to run 39 front, 35 rear as the door sticker. But now Pirelli have advised to try 42 front, 37 rear which I now have in.

It doesn’t seem to be a 255 issue, @Callump01 has 235’s on the front and his were shredded inside and out.

Callum has a square setup on his car and he has traction issues.

It might be very well the compounds of the Pirelli aren’t helping, but this does seem like an issue with the footprint of the tyre on the RS3’s when steering.

Surely all cars on full lock will have one tyre nearly on the side wall?

Surely all cars on full lock will have one tyre nearly on the side wall?

To some extent yes, but that isn’t the major issue the major issue is that only about 20% of the tyre is touching the road on a hard lock on one wheel, yes you aren’t on a hard lock often but it’s progressive obviously through the steering rack.

The one nearly being on the side wall causes slight wear on the outside of the tyre, but the inside is being shredded because all of the load weight of the car is on that part of the tyre. Getting Audi to say anything other than “that’s normal”, will be a challenge.

One of the reviews I read on the tyre page said amazing compared to pirelli on his rs3.
Dont know what model though so hard to judge but does show RS3 users.

It's a shame as I like the rim protector. Seems quite unique.

Wonder if perilli would comment on why so many pzeros getting buldges. I have 3 buldges on these tyres within 6 months yet never on any other car or tyre in 20 years.

Best thing I can recommend is contact them via email, they were outstanding with me. Came to my house to collect the tyres, when they were found to not be at fault they covered for wheel alignment and 4 wheels to be balanced at their performance centre, dealing with experts.
