Danny's A3 2.0 TDI Black Edition Casual Build Thread

Looks like a mission to fit. Well worth it though, looks awesome! Would like to know what the handling is like on bags.

Yeah it ****** was! But thanks man, I think the handling is worse because the Droplinks have been removed but better than what I thought it would be.

So got the air ride on over the weekend, took long enough! Still need to remove the anti roll bar at some point. Car is getting tracked this weekend with new tyres on too.

Next will be to get a chassis notch done to the car.

That black around the grill instead of chrome looks much better, did you do it yourself? forgive me if you already specified??

It comes standard on the Black Edition spec, wouldn't be difficult to wrap/spray though.

Not much of an update, B pillars are in the process of being wrapped. Will post some pics up when it's complete.

Looking good mate, have you had the notch done yet? Something I need to do myself, not sure if it’s worth it. A bit of fun, I just installed a remote, only cost about 10 pounds for the rf remote and diodes. Looking for 8 channel one so I can control all corners. It's got good range.

Thanks man, no haven't had it done yet. Will most likely leave it until I get some decent wheels. Oooo, now that's something I would like to do. I'll drop you a PM!

Booked a day off last week to give the car a good clean. Snowfoam, Shampoo, Clay bar, Polish, Wax.

Interior also cleaned and wheels sealed.

Thanks!
Not looking to keep the standard wheels on that long, maybe over the winter as I've had new tyres on.
Will be getting some nice show wheels next year ready for show season.

Car looks great man! need to pull my finger out and give mine a good detail

Question... Is it needed to remove the ARB or just something you do to get it sitting lower? would have thought that without it, and the addition of bags it would be wobbling all over the shop.

Thanks Jamie!

The ARB is still there just without the Droplinks. It handles pretty well without them I have to admit!

Ahh right okay, did you go for Slam series or the performance struts? when I can eventually convince myself that I can afford to buy bags, I'm more tempted to go for performance over the slam bags.

Slam series, they are fine for what I need tbh think performance are more for track use I would say. You could always get the Droplink mounts welded into the strut? They handle fine tbh.

Fair enough mate, never been in bagged car, and im a long way off at the minute. Come next year i'll be going for a spring/shock set-up and bigger wheels and good rubber. Ive done the static slammed thing and I now want to have fun... but none of this before I get a new turbo, mines not acting too well at the minute haha.

But I digress. Cars looking good, I don't want to fill your thread with nonsense, cant wait to see what you do next

I would say the ride is slightly less than standard but not as bad as Coilovers. I have done static slammed before and it's not great. Oh dear that's not good mate but thanks.

Just a quick update, at the weekend I gave the car another wax ready for the winter, shame it rained after:

I also managed to sort out the boot a little more, just need to order some carpet to finish it off.

Before & after I re-arranged the layout:

Retrofitted Cruise Control last night, went better than I thought! Used a dremel for the lower cowl also.

All programmed in and working spot on.

Sweet. I didn't trust myself with a dremel so bought a lower cowling too haha.

Small update to keep the thread alive:
LED Interior upgrade - front, rear, sun visors, glove box & boot were all upgraded.

Right then, time for an update!

First off, since the previous post I've finished the boot off, I know it looks fairly simple but it does the job, I can still have my cleaning supplies and other things in the back if need be. I took the wheels off and sealed them with Carbon Collective Platinum Wheels ready to put them on for summer, at this point the standard wheels were put back on, I also had a bit of time so went ahead and cleaned up and sealed the exhaust tips.

IMG 1314

Now that the wheels were sealed I put the new grill on before I went on holiday! The grill was from XenonzUK, I opted for the more expensive version and safe to say I wouldn't get anything but this one! Because of the new grill I had to paint the crash bar black, I went for hammerite satin black and turned out great.

I got the front and rear bumpers sprayed up and paid a little extra to get the wings blended in, the wheels were now put on the car ready for my first show!

IMG 1194

I then got the car booked in for a paint correction to remove minor swirls and scratches, I paid extra to get the deeper scratches out which required wet sanding. This included the following:

  • Wheels cleaned, including brake calipers
  • Tyres and wheel arches fully cleaned
  • Vehicle given a pre wash with an citrus degreaser including door shuts
  • Vehicle is given a thorough hand wash using a lambs wool wash mitt
  • Paintwork is cleansed with a clay bar and solution which removes any overspray, tar, tree sap and other debris that normal washing cannot eliminate
  • Paint thickness measured using an electronic thickness gauge
  • 1 stage machine polish to remove fine scratches, light swirls and imperfections
  • Vehicle is given a final hand wash using a lambs wool wash mitt
  • Fully Dried with machine blower
  • Paintwork cleansed (including door shuts) with pre-wax treatment
  • Super-premium carnauba wax or Sealant applied to all paintwork including door shuts
  • All chrome and metal surfaces cleaned, polished and protected
I also had the car coating with Gtechniq Crystal Cerum Ceramic Coating.

More to come, just need the time!
Looks great that, been contemplating going air for a long time for the practical side of it.

What determines the height the car sits at when it's air'd out, does it sit on the bump stops or do you leave air in the bags to get the height you want?

Yeah if you’re after a low car that’s practical then air is what you need.

I let all air out the bags so 0 psi and it will rest on the bumpstops on the rear shocks and I think the tyre rests on the inner arch lining at the front (cannot really see lol).

So after the first show was a success it was time for the next!

This was far from local, it was Low Kulture - Steelworks in Wrexham, very unique location.

Next was Stance Fever at Rockingham Motor Speedway, we stayed in a hotel close by the night before to make it easier in the morning. So that night we went out to grab some food and after a few minutes of driving I looked in my rear view mirror and to find this:

IMG 1728

Safe to say I wasn't impressed with what looks like an eagle dropping its **** on my car but it was still funny lol.

The next morning we arrived at the show, i'd added some gloss black wheel nut covers by this point which smartened the wheels up a little.

Next on the list was to camber the rear wheels so they tucked under the arch. Quite a lot of camber was needed to achieve this because the wheels are so wide! I changed the rear shocks beforehand so I could get more tuck. I felt the rear camber worked quite well with the extra concave on the rear wheels. Not only that but the was less rake on the car.

I apologies if some of the pictures don't come out great, I've had to compress them to be able to upload.

Below are a few pics from Edition 38 - Early Edition:

Then I decided to get a short number plate on the rear, I have since but this back to standard size.

Then it was time for Modified Nationals weekend, before this I changed the shocks back to the standard ones to pass the MOT as they were leaking. They don't go as low but stopped me from marking the alloys more.

Yeah it’s been long! But thank you mate , not sure what I’ll be doing to the car after this next show. I’m looking to upgrade next year depending on insurance costs.
