Evening all,

Well after several years of trouble free motoring from my 2.0 TDI Avant the CVT transmission developed a fault while on the motorway from Scotland to Manchester.

The car still drives but will not go up hills very well. There are no warning lights on the dash and the engine can be still be revved as normal.

My assumption is the clutch packs or the cones are knackerd but I'm not an Audi specialist so can't be sure.

Is there anyone in the Central Scotland area with experience of this kind of transmission or am I best throwing it at audi and stumping for a new one.

First off, I'd suggest getting the car scanned with VCDS to identify the fault (or faults). It might not necessarily be the clutch pack; it could be the ECU. It needn't cost too much to get the scan done. Check this link. You might find a forum member with the kit near enough to you to ask for help; alternatively, take the car to a good independent garage.

If it needs a new ECU, this firm can supply replacements on an exchange basis. Even if it needs more expensive intervention, I'd be reluctant to hand it over to an Audi dealer. They would most likely just replace the whole gearbox, and charge you many thousands of pounds for the privilege. If no one else on here can steer you in the direction of a specialist in your part of the country, get googling.

Best of luck in finding a solution. Oh, and I've edited your post slightly to keep it compliant with forum rules on swearing.

Well thanks for the reply and sorry for the profanity.

There is a specialist in Stirling who has the relevant VAG com equipment. I will need to see if he can come to the house as the vehicle does not drive well.

I will keep you posted on the outcome.

No big deal; it's just we have to apply the rules fairly to everyone when we see a "transgression".

Fingers crossed your man in Stirling can get to you and diagnose the problem accurately.

Hi again folks,

The company or specialist in stirling is SP Autobahn at spring kerse industrial estate.

They done a re map of a family members passat tdi 4 motion and this thing is stupid quick from 2000-4000 RPM.

Anyway he seems to know his stuff on VAG motors.

Hi again Folks,

Just an update on the CVT issue. I tried a couple of the VAG specialists around the central Scotland area however was dissiapointed by some of the answers I got back from these so called specialists.

Anyway got in touch with Mackie Transmissions in Glasgow. Spoke to a guy called John who said they won't be able to determine the cause until they have the car.
I told him it was un-driveable so he asked did I want it recovered so they could take it into there work shop for inspection.

I expected him to send a recovery truck around the next day at the earliest.
45 minutes later the truck turned up to pick the car. Very impressed.

5pm that night I got a phone call saying the Transmission ECU was at fault and he could have the car back to me in three days as I had to wait for the parts. They also suggested that I have the transmission serviced which it can only benefit from.

Anyway well done the guys out there very impressed I would highly recommend them if you have a CVT transmission or just any gearbox query.

Would highly recommend them. I've now got the money together to get myself an RS6 C5 so they will be the first port of call to have to have the transmission checked out.

Meant to say they were capable of repairing the transmission should it have needed it. Audi were not even prepared to do this.
