Constant whining from engine on S3

I'm getting a whining in relation to RPM coming from the drivers side of the car and engine area.
Just wondered if it was a characteristic of the car at all or if anyone had/has similar?
Happens in all gears etc

it's a 57 plate S3, manual on 34,000 miles.

My car has a constant whine too, but it comes from passenger seat area though.
I must start making my missus sit in the back.

Has the cambelt been changed yet? Not normal behavior, could be an idler/tensioner or waterpump/alternator/ac compressor.

Yes Cambelt was changed in March.

It's not feedback through the speakers possibly if related to RPM? Have you tried with the stereo off?
