Hi, I have an A3 Saloon Quattro 2.0 S Tronic 190 TFSI with mag ride and 19" wheels. The car has only done around 7000 miles and is just less than a year old.

It seems to have developed an odd constant hollow metallic noise in the last few months from the rear audible from 15 mph upwards. It doesn't change pitch. It is not road noise as it is higher pitched and doesn't change with speed.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Flatulence, known as farting or wind, is normal.

    Sorry could not resist.

Have you dropped the back seats recently? Would be my first place to look, some people have put tape on the locking bar to prevent rattles. Try dropping them and taking for a spin. When putting them back don't be gentle as to get a good lock.

Ha! Definitely not flatulence unless Le Pétomane was sitting in the back seat!!!

I’ve tried back seats down and noise is still there. It doesn’t change with speed. Finding it hard to describe. I saw there was a recall for some A3s to do with wheel bearing housing but my VIN number was not included in the list.

Do you think it is an external cabin sound then? I get the occasional sound coming from where the seat belt comes out of but simply adjusting it up or down resolves. I think some have reported rattles from the parcel tray and the window seals.

Yes definitely external. It’s a constant pitch - not a rattle. It’s not intermittent either. Always there from 15 mph and up. Booking it in today.

Thanks for your thoughts and taking the time to reply. Much appreciated.

    Check bushes
Check metal dust shield surround rear brakes
Check around prop shaft to the rear - the exhaust sits very close to this, could be touching
Check inside edge of tyres - I once had a wurrrrring noise and swore it was bearings but the tyres had twisted and caused the noise
