This thread is picture heavy, and just shows the picture step by step process of changing the gear knob in my 2006 56 2.0 TDI S LINE DSG with 57K FASH- RS3 replica

3 BITS OF INFO I FORGOT TO MENTION:

1) YOU NEED TO BUY / RE-USE THE METAL CLIP THAT I TOOK OFF AT THE START, TO SECURE THE GEAR KNOB (I bought a new one from AUDI, about £1.80)

2) When you are about to put the NEW GEAR-knob onto the modified Rod, this is the point where you pull the Plastic Rod out of the gear stick (THE GREEN HOLDING ROD in my pictures). But do NOT push the Shifter button in, until the Gear knob is all push down into place, and that's when you can carefully move the new gear knob into the different modes (N, D, P, R, S) etc

3) You have to snip of the end of the screw you fit into the rod, with a good pair of cutters

Haha literally just cleaned the inside of the car to take pictures as I was listing the car for sale. That's the cleaning spray. Pointless putting it onto a manual even if it did fit, but something I don't have the answer to I'm afraid

The plate in that first pic is awesome! Must have broke the bank to get it :sunglasses:

TX.

Nice guide, thanks a lot! I have a question about the metal clip. How did you secure it on the shifter? Did you have to press it with any tool or did you just put it on a plastic base rod of a gear knob and then somehow clicked on place? I mean, did you have to tighten the metal clip after you fit the gear knob on a shifter?

I received a s-line manual gear knob today but am hesitating to fit it as I need this last bit of information to avoid damaging anything.

Thanks dude. Took as long to retrofit the gear knob, as it did creating the guide haha

Hello brother
I have a problem on my S5 I have tried to put the same gear knob as I had as my original but only made from carbon fiber but I did it fast and I wasn't patience and I accidentally broke the top of the plastic lever.
I've seen your pictures and I have seen that you have cut the plastic lever top as well and you returned it in a very strong way to its place but I used super glue and it holds but it's not very strong so I'm not able to put any gear knob now
I need your advice on how to put the plastic tip back and needed to be very strong.
If you can contact me by Whatsapp that will be perfect because it will be more convenient for me to show you the problem and to send you pictures and videos and you can guide me how to fix it I want to avoid buying a new entire mechanism .

Thanks brother
