hi folks,

i know there is a lot of threads on this topic but hoping you can tolerate one more!

i have a non auto headlight b8, i know from reading on here that the only way to get coming/leaving home to function is to retrofit the light sensor, i have two questions, first, despite my car not having auto lights or the required sensor, there is a light sensor in it somewhere, how i noticed this was in an underground carpark, where the backlights on the speedo/rev counter go dark - so there must be a light sensor somewhere? and i know the answer is probably no but is there anyway that this senor could be used to make coming home work?

secondly in the Inevitability that it cant be used as a sensor for coming home, could anyone recommend a canbus friendly kit that would?

thanks
Dave

I would have thought it would be based on the light sensor rather than auto lights, but could be wrong. Coding in vcds may do it, but again i am not expert

from what i understand it uses the light sensor that is built into the windscreen just above the rear view mirror on cars fitted with auto lights, just thought that maybe the other light sensor that tells the dash to dim could be used instead, i have activated all the respective options in vcds and have them present in my mmi but it doesn't work - im also not bothered if the coming home function works all the time as opposed to just when sufficiently dark - im conscious of any aftermarket kits as the canbus in these cars seems to be very sensitive

also possibly is it just a case that if i fit the "auto" headlight switch - it will work but just all the time regardless of day/night? although from all i have read its a combination of the light sensor in the windscreen and the auto headlight switch - not too pushed on buying an auto switch if its not going to work :/

The light sensor that turns the clocks back light off is in the clocks. At least it was in my A1. A little circle can be seen in the rev counter

Yep, same in the A4 B8. Light sensor is located bottom right side of the speedo.

The headlight switch has to be in AUTO for coming home lights to work.
So if you dont have a switch with that position I guess you need one.

I did not know it was possible to buy a B8 without auto lights!!

Hmm maybe I'll see if I can find a cheap Auto switch in a scrappy and test. Yeah i was surprised that it doesn't have Auto headlight especially because it's a 3.0 it's an Irish spec car though for example despite having all the s line options it's actually a Quattro sport model as true s line wasn't available in Ireland until late 2011. Anyway there's your useless piece of info for the day ha thanks for all the replies folks I'll test with the switch and report back ;)

Yes we are weird in Ireland.

Well a brace of specialist tourist buses, quite new VW T based buses that I followed for a short time on the way down from Dundee, were throwing out very Paraffinny smells - they claimed to be from South of England though!

right so, the switch by itself didnt work so thats that answered, i have since purchased the light sensor itself and the loom from kufatec - i got the loom today which has a nice connector on one end for the senor but just three wires on the other, i have been googling for a while now and cant find images of where i need to wire this into, can anyone shed some light? (no pun intended)

this is the loom i bought - https://www.kufatec.de/shop/en/audi/a4/a4-b8-8k/cable-set-rain-light-sensor-audi-a4-8k-a5-8t-q5-8r

Yipes, have you noticed what else Kufatec say that you need to buy, ie correct windscreen, interior mirror and switch and light/rain sensor?

This is the second kit that I've looked at from Kufatec that do not have any installation instructions, a bit of research needed then!

just wanted to get the light sensor working mate largely just for coming/leaving home functionality, not going to mount the sensor on the windscreen probably just have it mounted somewhere like bottom corner of windscreen near the speakers in the top corner (yeh i know not the proper way of doing it but effective) already got the auto switch and fitted it, just not sure what the story is with where those wires go, i can see from the fuse board cover where the fuse for the light sensor is just not sure which one of the wires goes in there and obviously then what to do with the others

I'm guessing that the socket is for connecting to the mirror, each of these grey wires will have an ident on it which should conform with Audi's wiring components, ie connectors etc.

would the socket not be to connect into the light sensor itself? the connector fits - i then assume that one goes to that fuse in the board, but the un-crimbed wire has me? hardly an earth or something?

Sorry, I was just guessing where that connector went to, but I suppose we are both talking about the same thing as that sensor should live within the mirror housing.
Normally you can eventually work out what is printed along the grey wire, it might take some time and with a circuit diagram for the car in front of you to make any sense of it. I've never had to deal with what to expect from being handed a bared wire though - reading and working out what the printing means on the wires will be what you must do - definitely not an earth the one with the tag will be an earth - I'd guess as Kufatec will be using grey wire with printing on them instead of colour coded wires.
