Hi all, i am new here so firstly without being rude... hello!

I have recently purchased a 2005 audi A4 1.9tdi. All was fine with the vehicle but it has developed an odd noise when i change down through second and first gear. It only make the noise when i am still on the clutch not when i am off it.

It makes no noise changing from 1st to second. but when i change from third to second or from second into first around two and a half thousand revs (allowing the engine to break for me) there is an odd noise from around the gear box area (although not sure) when the clutch is nearly all the way up. Then it dissapears when in the gear. it will also do it slightly when changinging into third at high revs from forth.

Its sounds a bit like a pigeon... no joke.

It pulls well through all the gears, does not slip out of gears and is easy to get into gear so i don't think it is the gear box. There a slight bit of judder when driving off in 1st so it point me further towards being the clutch.

It does not make the noise if i try to match the revs ( or i may just not be able to hear it). What do you guys think the problem is?

Any help appreciated.

I'd be interested in people's thought on this too as I seem to have the same issue at the moment

Well I have a 2.0TDi 2005 and had my garage order me a new clutch, as I was getting the juddering at driving off.

Not sure this affects the 1.9, but when the clutch was ordered, my fly wheel was flagged up as a replacement too, seems they had an issue in the 2005 models.
Can't say I ever remember the pigeon sound though tbh, sorry I'm not more of a help to you.

I hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

I had a 51 plate 1.8T (petrol) which done exactly the same. It turned out it was the flywheel and got done on warranty. Don't know if they are the same on 1.9 diesel but 1.8T petrol had a dual mass flywheel which were prone to wearing slightly? The clutch never slipped thou so would'nt of got it done if not under warranty.

Thanks for all your help.

It seems like its the flywheel then, I am guessing this may turn into an expensive fix. Any body have an idea of how much it'll cost me?

my cars at audi now waiting for new clutch and fly wheel, its £710 for clutch and about £600 for fly wheel!
gutted only had car four month!

If you are paying why take it to Audi?
My local dealer charges around £100 an hour labour, far cheaper to use a local specialist.
There is no way i would take my car back to Audi for anything other than warranty work.
Nik.

i phoned around a few garages and they were all quoting me near enough the same price and then theres the expense of getting the car to the other garage.
p.s. those prices above include fitting and labour.

Didn't imagine the cost would be so high, mines only done 17k so hopefully there's plenty of life left in it

just found out the cost should,nt be so high! i am going to have to phone more garages to find the right price, apparantly the clutch should only be about 350.00 compared to the 710.00 audi quoted me!
