hi all

i have a 1997 a3 8l 1.8 (nt)

a couple of times over the last week something odd has happened on the cluster.

car starts fine - but the dash lights go out for about .5 sec and the trip meter resets itself to 0

no other symptons and vcds doeesnt show any erros

is the soldering on the cluster getting old - dry joints

any one else had this symptom

thinking of getting it done at
one of these companies
http://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/repair/model/audi-a3s3-8l-instrument-cluster-repair-service
https://cartronix.co.uk/product-cat...Ee1QiOD087CYwPu4j7j9F1z2U4aGdmNsaAnLsEALw_wcB

any thoughts

cheers

thanks ill have a look

is it a common problem on the older A3 ?

just cant think of what else it might be

ill check the fuses - the ones near the battery top look all fine - i replaced them last year
ill search on the forum for ignition switch problem, but it does start every time its just the dash lights and trip meter
and yesterday it read a quarter of a tank of fuel but i knew it was half full,
switched ignition off left it turned it back on back to half a tank

i was hoping someone would say - yeah had the same problem definatley cluster

so ill start knocking some of the easy possible casues off my list as you suggest fuses

yeah i did

i checked the fuses all ok

and found my battery is on the way out

it charges at 14 volts when running
but i dont think its holding a charge - what a ****
drops down to 11.86

i dont know to be honest - maybe it is over 3 years old

swapped it out today
will see what happens after a few days
might have saved me £150 as i thought it was the cluster

hi thanks MPH
it hasnt done it since i swapped the battery round - so i think it might have been that

although i now have a dented wing when i wasnt careful coming out the garage
so that will probably be another post on how to remove/replace it

Is pretty straightforward bolt off bolt off nice one with the battery/cluster issues...

yeah im glad i didnt spend on sending my cluster off -
yeah just found a wing in good condition and the same colour which is a bonus
yeah it looks like take bumper off - inner arch liner - few bolts and swap it back around
although last time i took the bumper off some of those stupid clips broke
any idea where i can get them ?

Yes thats the one.Small hole in lower grill three prong push in so you can pull out or unclip via electrical connection.
