A big chunk of clear coat came off my bumper whilst cleaning the car. Is this covered by paint warranty? (Answer in hysterical laughter GIF only).

Can’t answer for sure, they’ll likely say it had a stone chip and isn’t covered as that’s what they did with my wife’s Kodiaq when the paint completely peeled off the headlight washer cover while we were driving.

Had to go to Skoda UK and even then they only grudgingly sorted it... Only 2 months old and 1800 miles on it as well when it happened!

Most cars are showing their age at 4-5 years on that kind of mileage, so a bumper refresh can give a new lease of life. Agreed it shouldn't be coming off during a wash. Once moisture gets under the lacquer its almost impossible to stop, without sanding back and clear coating again.

Four years ago my S4 was nearly 3 years old, it had lost the clear coat (around 150mm diameter) on the bumper and my local Audi dealer had it resprayed without question.

Had this with my last BMW (OK – I know this is an Audi group) when it was just inside the 3 year pain warranty. They argued it was a stone chip, exacerbated by pressure washing, but I did persist and in the end they resprayed the front bumper.

Not a bad result, given I was driving around 40k / year so well over 100k miles on the clock.

Threads like this are why I would never pressure wash my car, patios only for mine.

Used a pressure washer on all my cars and never had a single issue to be honest. Even a 20 year old Yaris and a 15 year old Subaru never had the paint or lacquer coke off.

In my mind, if the pressure washer takes something off then it wasn’t applied well enough in the first place. That said, I’m only talking about basic domestic pressure washers, I’m sure you could do plenty damage with an industrial one if you tried.
