Cleaning the windscreen

I am probably being stupid but how the hell do you get the windscreen wipers to stay up so you can clean the windscreen ?
Every time I turn on the wipers, and when they are up I turn off the ignition but the darstadly wipers just go back down making it impossible to lift them to clean the windscreen

- there's a park mode for the wipers

Turn the ignition on, then off. Within 10 secs, press down on the wiper stalk (quick wipe) and they will go to park position. You can then lift them without hitting the bonnet.

But whatever you do don't leave them up in the air while you manouver the car because after a minute or two they'll try and return to the bottom of the screen scratching the bonnet edge and one of them could even fly off and land about ten feet away in bits.
