Wondered if anyone had tried removing the thin chrome ring trim on a dash air vent. Before I start blindly trying to force it off and likely breaking it. I've never really liked the chrome ring and been thinking about maybe removing it completely (does it leave ugly marks?), or removing it and repainting it maybe matt/gloss black or similar.

The entire vent actually just pulls out, take your time and pull from top bottom left and right and it will slowly come out. I had to remove both my centre ones to fit my magnetic phone holder.

turn 1/4 turn clockwise and pull out with hand. Just use tips of fingers to wiggle it out. The unit can be disassembled. The silver ring can be changed to black by using a donor unit older unit. I assume you have the black unit with the silver ring? I would use the gloss black unit to give a contrast. Without the ring, the unit looks fugly. You need an eyeglass screwdriver and place it under the silver ring and gently pry up and then work your way around
