Chain tensioner S3

Does anybody know if there a way of inspecting/replacing the timing chain tensioner without removing the valve cover on a 2008 pre-facelift S3? I've searched and all the videos/posts and even kits for replacing the chain and tensioner show the removal of the valve cover? Thanks

I would say that you have your answer then - to do it properly, you have to be able to lock the cams in position, which will require the cam cover to come off.

Thanks, I was hoping there might have been an easier way to inspect it I hadn't found yet.
