Hi folks glad to be parts of the site.

Hopefully someone can help me with a dilemma I have.

I have a 2010 a3 1.8tfsi cdaa which has developed a misfire and loss of power.

Taken the car into local vag specialists who diagnosed P0302 and low compression on that cylinder.

Their advice was get a new engine we will fit it for you.

1. They can't actually tell me where or why the leak has formed so I have no clue as to whether a cylinder head would do the job.

2. Trying to find a recon engine seems very hard, would a 2.0tfsi fit without too much of a problem, as they seem more available and cheaper.

Please someone give me some advice on this as its starting to become a bit of a headache

Take the head off and pistons out (drop the sump) and see what the issue is. There is a chance you’ll get away with a new set of pistons and rings (assuming head is fine) for less money and fix the oil usage issue the 1.8 is known for.

Take it to a Audi specialist, not a general mechanic.

It was a local audi specialist I took the car into. Said that he didn't have time or space to strip it down, just buy a new engine he will fit it for me. Bug I don't have a spare 2500 lying around to get a recon engine supplied and fitted.

I have found a 2.0tfsi for 1295 with only 61k on it, but not sure if it would fit without having to upgrade other ancillaries too.

Im ideally wanting to find someone who can do a leakdown test to tell me whether it's the valves or the pistons so that I'm not wasting money buying things I don't need, but it seems no one foes that any more.

If you go 2.0 you’ll likely need a the 2.0 ecu or a remap, assuming they are the same model. Ancillaries and that will be the same.

If they don’t have time then they clearly don’t what your business!

Where abouts in Scotland - some one could recommend an alternative

It could be the cdaa 1.8 taken out and a cdaa 2.0 put in. I read in a few posts they share the same ecu but I'm just not sure. I spoke to the garage I had the car into and he just said it needs to be a straight swap.

Starting to think he is just a lazy mechanic who doesn't want to do anything that isn't plu and play.

Regardless of the diagnosis of low compression, I'd want to ensure the coil pack and sparking plug had been swapped with another cylinder just to be sure the fault does not move - I guess that has already happened ?

Yeah the first thing I did to try solve it was new plugs and new coil pack, the I thought maybe faulty injector which is when I found out about the low compression.

Haven't swapped the new ones around though.

I'd I could just get someone to do a cylinder leakage test to find out more then it might narrow down the possible causes

If you want someone who is highly rated in Scotland look up @davehenson. Dh.Automotive in Falkirk as there isn't anything that Davey doesn't know about Vag cars . Very nice guy to have a chat with plus he can map cars too , done a great job on mine and i only got a st1 done and i am pushing 330bhp on my 8p S3 .hope this helps

Yeah all the good ones are miles away from me. The car is sorn at present till I can get it fixed. Spoke to a really nice guy who wanted me to take it up to him, sounded enthusiastic about finding the cause rather than just refitting. Problem is he is in Inverness
