Carbon clean recommendation

Just in case this is useful for any one else. I used A1 German Cars in Stevenage.

See images for the pre and post

Night and day difference, all misfires solved, strong pull throughout rev range from standstill and very good service. Very happy!

Ah, proper blasting with walnut shells etc, normally that thread title means "quality snake oil" - good result!

Yep very pleased with the result. I've been having misfires for months on end and to solve it took a lot of work. Constantly measuring with VCDS and getting p*ssed off with the data. Short journys over lockdown can't have helped much either.

I wasn't interested in 'miracle cures' or quick fixes, so did the following at some expense:
  • Injectors tested (one replaced), all now in spec, all seals replaced
  • PCV replaced, can now hear the EVAP; the clicking is much more audible. I actually opened the old one and it didn't actually seem to have an issue with the diaphragm. Oil usage might have improved, however.
  • Plus and coils checked/replaced
  • random vacuum pipe from the EVAP had split, so replaced this
  • Compression tested - all good
In the end, the carbon clean did the job.

I'd recommend it to anyone with a direct injection car. There's some chat about later TFSI engine have eight injectors(?), rather than four. I wonder if they have port and direct injection, in which case carbon may not be such a big issues.

Anyhoo, i'm over the moon with the result, ~£350 for the carbon clean and worth every penny. I was not enjoying my car, but loving it now!

Good, and a good idea to have a figure for doing that, though on the S4 it will cost a bit more plus a bit more.

Yes, for a short period VW Group added port injecting to some engines, but I seem to think that was eventually dropped again! Certainly my older daughter's end of May SEAT Leon Cupra does not have port injectors, just either blanking plugs or "not opened up" positions on the inlet manifold. I think the cheeky beggars said that port injection was added to the direct injection to improve emissions, no mention of it getting rid of port coking - which is obviously not a recognised issue!

Yep that's interesting. I know the later 2.0 TFSI engines had a higher bph figure (~230? ) over mine (CDNC, 208), which may or may not be related. Torque seemed to stay sstatic though.

I'd imagine carbon would still be an issue, even with port injection, given the amount of fuel sprayed on the valve seats/stems would be lower than pure port injection.

Anyhoo, my driver's side interior door pull cable has frayed and come apart at the hook, so ghetto fix for today until the new cable arrives...

Think in gpf cars the second set of injectors was removed.
