I'm wondering of there are any Audi Techs here, or any0one familiar with the component protection features on the 8V. There's a few jobs on my car that I want to do: remove/unplug the passenger side matrix headlight so I can sand and polish a run from some paint work I had done, the sticker on the side of my ECU got torn when the car was being mapped and is hanging partly off, and it's like to stick it down properly, but really need to unplug it to do it, and I want to add an aftermarket CarPlay unit to another 8v that involves unplugging the MMI (with B&O amp). All 3 of these items I'm hearing might have component protection, and if unplugged may not work again without the dealership getting involved, but I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I really don't want to find out the hard way...

Can anyone shed some light on how this works, and what I need to beware of?

Thanks

Cp matches components to the car, vin, so unless you're swapping between cars, you'll be fine.

Hardly ever seen cp tripped due to unplugging, reconnecting, this isnt the norm & usually if this occurs, its symptomatic of another issue, you should be ok.

Thanks for the reply. How about things like matrix headlight calibration. If it is removed will that need recalibrating?

Talk of aftermarket CarPlay device would suggest that you have a pre-facelift car, which in turn means you don’t have matrix lights. You will be fine to disconnect.

MR DJ -
a reply from my tame 'expert'
Component protection checks that the Id of the component matches that of the component Id stored in the gateway.
If he unplugs and reconnect the same components all good.
Best to do with ignition off and battery off if a kl30 fed ECU like engine.

oopse sorry mr DJ I wondered why you were asking!!!!! - think first type second

CarPlay is on a PFL, thanks, that is reassuring it will be ok. The Matrix are on a 2020. Any issues unplugging the matrix light on one side, and will sit need recalibration?

Is there any issue unplugging the ECU on the 2020?

So you are talking about two cars. No problems with unplugging and then reconnecting parts on either car.

VCDS cannot remove CP but can code the unit. My advice would be to seek the assistance of a specialist. I would offer my services but am guessing you are not in the UK....

while I can work remotely you would require a special interface to allow me to connect, which would probably make the works uneconomical.

That’s component protection. Volume will not work until this is removed. Also, any features you are not licences for will shut down once protection is removed.

Yes as the reporting of the part serial number or VIN in question may have been delayed. I had this the other week with an MIB unit a customer purchased from eBay as a direct replacement for his faulty one. I installed the unit, remove component protection, coded and restored all the original licences officially and with no issues and a week later the police turned up at my door asking questions after VW Group had contacted them. Is rare to find yourself in this situation tho.

Hope I do not encounter such a problem! Thank u very much

Sorry to bring up an older thread. With component protection, will it be triggered if I got a new cluster from audi since it has not been installed previously?

Yes, any new component that uses cp as an installer process, needs matching to a vin.
