Can anyone near Guildford help me with a diagnostic? (Surrey, Hampshire)

2004 A4 Avant Sport 130 1.9 TDI

Emissions Control System warning light has illuminated on the dash.

I'd like to know where to start because I am fairly competent and always keen to learn.

I live just south west of Guildford in Surrey. A few miles from the Hampshire border.
