My cam chain tensioners rattling when the revs are picked up slightly. Will too thin oil cause it to be noisy and will a thicker grade help reduce the noise. I ask about the oil as i have 5w40 synthetic in at the moment before it had 10w40 and it wasnt noisy also i have seen castrol 15w40 high mileage would anyone recommend this for a turbo car as its done 160000 miles now thanks.

i use 5w40 and my cam chain doesnt rattle, how often do you change the oil? A lot of people on here recommend 5w40

yeah iv seen that 5w40 is recommended but so is 10w40 obviously it depends on mileage also the tensioner isnt that loud. Im changing the oil next week as its due so i will try 10w40s to see if its quieter if not it looks like a new one.

Mines the same on the S3 mate, while driving you just need to accelerate slightly & it rattles low down in the revs for just a second then stops, it hasn't got any worse in the couple of years I've had the car but I'm now looking to replace it when I can find a genuine one for a good price as I don't won't it to get really bad & be left with no choice but to buy from audi, oil won't make any differance, its the piston on the tesioners that stop holding pressure or the plastic slipper pad thats worn.

Thanks mate thats the kind of reply i was looking for. Looks like il be on the phone to audi tomorrow.

Just for reference the part no is 058109217B and is around £130 from the dealers. For non vvt cars.

ah, mines AMK so got vvt, at least double yours in price i think, will fit it myself though so no worries on extra costs for me there. :)

Iv had a quick check on vagcat and yours is at least double the price of mine on their price list its £256 but would be more at the dealer as mine was. The part no is 058109088E and heres a link Audi A3/S3/quattro 2002 you might not be able to see it if your not registered on vagcat though.

Well i changed my oil to 10w40 carlube triple r not the best stuff i know and at first the engine was quieter but the tensioner was still rattly. I left it for a few days checked again today and its not rattling anymore. Im not trying to say your all wrong but it seems my theory was right so far. Im not going to be over optimistic though and im going to keep checking it now and again but so far so good.
