Hi all, just after a few prices for a cam belt change on a 98 a4 2.4v6 what have you paid either main dealer or private garage just want to know if I'm being ripped off. Cheers.

£800 main dealer and they usually forget to change the water pump, so you need to factor in another change in about 20k miles (that's if you have an engine left).
Should be about half that at a VAG specialist as it's mostly labour and they'll actually do the job properly!

Ooof!:faint: I only paid £850 for the car! Is it a job i could tackle my self? I do all other work on my own cars but never tackled a cam belt, i know its bumper and radiator off plus a few other bits and bobs just to get to the aux belt but im ok with that, dose anyone do there own? Cheers.

Budget around £300 for a cam belt kit fitted amd supplied from a decent Indie garage.

It is very possible you can do it yourself, how handy are you with the spanners? Its a 6-7 out of 10 job i recon

£350 without thermostat and 400 with the thermostat, supply and fit full Contitech cambelt kit(includes vibration damper, relay roller belt and tensioner), KWP water pump, 5L of G12 antifreeze, aux. drivebelt and diagnostic test to make shure everything is fine. Regards, Chris- 077 899 12128.

I called up audi and asked about the fixed price servicing when I still had my 2.8q and they quoted me £404.94 + £120 to do the water pump aswell. Which I thought wasn't a bad price.

edit: oh and that was Southampton audi

i can get it done for £120 if i buy the kit myself

I was quoted £0 for the labour to replace the waterpump during the cam belt change as there's minimal labour required.

This was for a 1.8T engine though, not sure if the waterpump is harder to replace in your engine but £120 seems steep if you're paying to have the cam belt done.

This guy did my cambelt a few weeks ago. Highly reccomended.............

theres actually more work doing the water pump on a 1.8T than a V6 once the timing belt is off, becuase the water pump isnt inside the timing case on a 1.8T

I did my cambelt as a consequence of my waterpump failing, had to take the front end off so might as well get it all done. I just wish I had done the A/C pump at the same time.

Again, Contitech kit from Euros', £120ish trade. Water pump about £16 trade (metal impellor:- v. important!!!) This was a 1.8T, mind.

Hardest part I found was getting the front bumper back on. It's still not quite right actually

i did mine in november. i got the full conti kit, its a good kit as all the components are brand name and i wasnt grudged putting money on that at all.

i bought an audi water pump. £40 or so, plastic impellor, but ive never had a plastic impellor die before and the original one was plastic and had lasted 115k miles.

i did the aux belt tensioner too. another £50

all in all, parts including stat and gaskets were £220 ish. i changed the guide roller for the aux belt too.

the price quoted by audi didnt include stat, water pump, tensioner, anything. just belt and a few rollers so a total waste of money.

I never had any trouble with the plastic impellor until it failed at 57k, 24hours after reterning from Sweden. If it had failed on the continent I would have been in much more serious trouble!

Yup, the spindle was just freewheeling inside the impellor! I immediately knew what was going on, I had changed the stat a week earlier!

DIY, of course. Stat wasn't too bad if I remember rightly.

Everything I do to my car is DIY, 'cos I'm a tightwad.

id probably still cry my eyes out if i had to do the w/p a week after the stat. im so lazy with car stuff now :p

... im so lazy with car stuff now...

Lol, I just have an irrational fear of opening my wallet, which is why my car is still mechanically stock and my current AMG wheels project stands to cost me about £38 total!

i just cannot stand the thought of having to pay someone else to do stuff to my car that effectively i do enjoy, which they wont do properly ANYWAY, and its all a learning experience.

diy for the win. paying other people to mess up stuff on your car is just stupid

...paying other people to mess up stuff on your car is just stupid

True 'dat! By all accounts I can do a good job of doing that for free! Also, it's by far the best way to learn about your car, and lose the fear of your oily bits

100%

i can remember when i used to do loads of miles between cheshire and essex in the golf. id be sat there for hours during the night and id think to myself "if the car broke down now, whats likely to be the cause" and you can think through all the possible bits

i know that golf inside out. the S4, ive only done "basic" things on that car so dont know it as well as i could
