Hi all
I have a A4 '00 2.4 30v Auto for many years
I am looking to buy a new car for my 50th next year, what are your thoughts on the car?
what tax are you paying? as its a bit confusing on Autotrader, i believe the tax sky-rocketed in April '17

As I have recently discovered, somewhat to my annoyance, you’ll be paying an additional £310 a year in tax for the first 5 years on a 252ps quattro, so £510 pa in total.

Basic is £495 over the £40k new car threshold before you add options.

Think I’m gonna go 190ps and add more options to bring it in at just under £40k, unless I can get Audi to discount a 252ps further to make it worthwhile.

For vehicles over £40K, the second year tax is £140 plus the additional £310 which has to be paid for 5 years.

I believe you can take the OTR cost out of the price for BED liability purposes so some cars just over £40k do scrape by under the threshold.

£140? GOV.co.uk car tax calculator has the 252 at £200 per year + the additional £310.

What’s BED liability?

The tax is based on list price so even with discounts you still pay higher rate of tax

Spot on, however the discount can offset it...

Well no the discount doesn't offset it if the discount is also available on a car that is just under the threshold.

List price is defined without OTR from a fiscal POV hence my point that a car with an OTR price just over £40k may just qualify once this is deducted and it then is just under £40k. This was the case at one point on 718 Caymans.

Right think I’ve finally got it now! £200+£310 in year 1, then £140+£310 in the subsequent 4 years.

****** fun police!

Didn't know this!
My local Audi dealer told me at point of sale it's on the ROTR price that counts so I spec my A5 to £50 less than this!

apologies guys i meant a new USED car, new in my eyes . should i start a new thread?

glad its highlighted the issues on new cars

From Audi website...

Recommended On-The-Road (OTR) retail prices include: delivery charge, half a tank of fuel, number plates, first registration fee at £55.00 and Vehicle Excise Duty.

Recommended On-The-Road (OTR) retail prices shown are based on the current 2017/18 VED rate.
As outlined in the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s 2015 budget, the way Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is calculated will change from Saturday 1 April 2017 for the majority of vehicles. The first licence will continue to be calculated using the vehicle’s CO2 value, but subsequent licences will be based on a standard rate of £140. Vehicles with a list price exceeding £40,000 (including factory installed options, delivery charge, number plates and VAT) will pay an additional £310 plus the standard annual rate for a 5 year period. After the 5 year period only the standard rate will apply.
Further information is available from DVLA here: www.gov.uk/newvehicletaxrates

Regardless of how much you pay for a second hand car registered after 1 April 17, if the original price was in excess of £40K the £310 is in place for the 5 year period.

Still applies to any car registered after 1st April 2017.
So buy before this or even a used car that did retail over £40k will have higher rate of tax as outlined above!

Indeed so you can deduct the 1st year VED, a bit like the P11d value. In other words, some cars listed at more than 40k do scrape by when deducting the first year tax makes the price go under the threshold. I thought you could take all the OTR cost off but clearly not !

The 252 seems to be a rare car, no doubt due to the tax implications discussed above. I can only see 2 on autotrader.

Good luck though, I’m sure it’s a great car.

yes it seems that way, i have time on my side though hopefully more will be on sale when new reg comes out?

also need to know what spec to look out for, i know i want
B&O sound, parking sensors
folding mirrors
virtual cockpit would be nice but not essential

If you find one, you'll love it - I know I love mine. The traction from the quattro system is fantastic and the engine is really smooth and responsive. The B&O debate has been done many times here and some (including myself) feel the 10 speaker Audi Sound System is a decent enough sounding system. Others think the B&O system is essential and well worth the extra. Try auditioning both before forking out. VC is nice and does make the car feel special. You'll be wishing you'd got the storage pack if you don't spec it as it adds some really useful seat back nets, boot storage nets, storage cubby under the headlight switch and some storage and cupholders in the rear armrest - all things that you'd really expect to be standard.

thanks for your comments quattro is a must for me if i done my research when i bought the b5. so i am allowing more time

I have netting on my seatbacks however the have gone saggy TBH i could get a net for the boot and change the cubby hole later stage? , however agree its a nice touch.
i wont be buying new so choice may be limited to the must haves 1st.
what year is your one? and any pictures?

B&O is no longer a stand-alone option, it’s included in the Comfort & Sound pack.

very very nice, wheels are nice too 19"? the ones ive seen have the 18" i take it you are paying £135 tax per year?

Thanks, yeah they are 19s. Tax for mine is 245 as it is a personal import so is taxed on the old system based on engine size rather than CO2

I would have thought so as the audi sound system was standard. Can't think of any other they'd offer...
the audi sound system is standard, the B&O is an extra option

oh must have been worth while? i take it you bought this new?

Not sure it was financially worthwhile but I was moving back to the UK and had space in a shipping container. As I'd only had the car a year I decided if I couldn't get the price I wanted to sell it for I'd bring it back. It's going to be a keeper now so it is just as well I like it as much as I do.
