I’m hoping forum members with 7 speed s tronic and in particular combined with Quattro can share good and bad experiences with the twin clutch gearbox.

What symptoms to look out for etc

Has anyone had a mechatronics failure even if the oil and filter is changed every 38k miles?

A specialist told there are actually two filters to be changed but Audi only change one.

Thanks in advance.

I am having Gearbox overheating warning on dash while driving. Had my car with independent geabox specialist who advised electro magnetic plate kit changing and qouted £1100 + VAT for the job. Had my work with Audi tech who advised servicing gearbox oil should cure the problem.

My car got 75K on clock right now with stage 1 map for both ECU and TCU. Car is booked for S-tronic gearbox service on 27th. Lets see if this cures the problem.

Thanks for I info.

What model is your A6 and what power and torque is it putting out after the remap?

Mine is 2012 and its running 333bhp with 780nm.

Wow. That’s around 100 lb ft of torque more than the Bitdi.

Is it true they use a conventional automatic on the Bitdi as there is a limit to the amount of torque the s tronic can handle?

BiTdi is 8 speed tiptronic. As per the manual, the maximum torque for s-tronic is 600nm.

I had a DSG expert change the gear of fluid and both filters.

No error codes and no software updates due.

Best to eliminate the potential for any wear and know that it has fresh oil filters.

Cassidy in western industrial estate Dublin. They know DSG inside out and fixed the mechatronics on my wife’s A3.

Ask for Richie

How did the DSG oil service go?

i'm not at all sure here but know i'll be corrected if i am wrong.
does this box have a cooler thermostat for the gearbox like the passat ? they can stick and cause weird stuff on the VW

For first 2 days it was fine, no warning on dash but now it's same. Keep popping the warning everytime I lift and press the throttle

How do the changes feel? Particularly going from 1 to 2 and then from 3 down to 2

There are no issues while driving with gear changes. It's just pops up and go away. It doesn't even store error in module.

I'm pretty certain it's sensor issue. But struggling to find garage who will look at it as not too many transmission specialists in Birmingham area

@Devilz Walton Audi know at least one DSG gearbox inside out.... mine!

Dig through the chat history: mine is on the same STronic box as the low/mid end TDI's and it failed almost exactly 3 years ago - no oil change history required: it was at <8000miles, 3yrs and 3 days old... and that's on a supercharged TFSI PRE-remap*, so NOT a lot of torque compared to oil-burners - only slightly more than a 2.5TDI/2.7TDI, similar to the lower end 3.0TDI. My A6 has a full Audi Service History and was completely stock at the time of failure.

*Even after the remap the torque wouldn't have been a problem for mine - the TFSI's are very different beasts to remap compared to TDIs - you don't touch the low RPM torque and peak torque (much!) - it just doesn't bleed supercharger boost pressure prematurely and holds most of that 440Nm to 7000rpm now :)....

When it failed: as soon as the DSG tried to shift up to 2nd, it disabled that half of the gearbox and it just disabled gears 2,4,6,R. I had to drive it in "Sport", to get it to rev out so it didn't bog down on each upshift as it was going 1-3-5-7.... AND I had to turn the car off and restart to get into reverse, three point turns were a PAIN. Text book Mechatronic failure.

Turns out that there's a known problem with the S-Tronics up to about 2015: all related to why Audi did a full safety recall on the S5's and S4's in North America** and why they only put the STronic in the 204PS V6 TDI, never the 240-270-ish PS TDI's until that issue was resolved - there is a re-designed mechatronic unit on the later models (and on all recalled cars) - apparently should be good for a LOT more torque, but I'm not sure how much - if you were considering remapping a TDI - torque isn't an issue for my remap :)

**not clear why they didn't actual recall elsewhere, but there were a couple of reports in the US of S5's completely seizing up in the middle of highways! (cue Fight Club-style conversation about publicity/compensation, etc)....

And in reference to the BiTDI's - they've always been on the ZF 8-speed and probably always will as they can handle a LOT of torque - pretty sure that's the same drivetrain that's used in the 4.2TDI in the A8/Q7.

Is it safe to say the 2015 facelift 272 3.0tdi has the revised s tronic gear box ?

Thanks

yeah - they didn't start putting the DSG into the mid-spec TDI until after they'd changed the mechatronic unit... not sure what the difference was or if they did anything else to help with the torque... I'd be looking for a ZF based TDI if I wanted any significant remapping though as TDI remaps tend to just bump the torque curve up, especially at lower revs (which is what makes the car feel so much quicker, especially at low revs), compared to the petrols, where you get crazy gains in peak bhp (especially with the detuned s'charged cars), but mostly through maintaining that torque right up the rev range (power = torque x revs).... hence why mine got that DSG gearbox at the same time as the low-end V6 TDI... it's only got a fraction more torque (than the 204PS), but roughly double the power as it gets that torque from 2500 rpm to over 6000rpm....

So basically you saying Audi know about this already as it's been recalled safety issue in past regarding s-tronic gearboxes?

This may have changed, but Audi UK wouldn't acknowledge that it was a "known issue" when mine failed three years ago, but in late 2014 there were several S4's and S5's (s'charged V6, quattro + DSG) that had seized up on the highways in the US. Shortly after this, Audi US apparently did a recall / safety recall on them (completely unverified, forum here-say only).

I took mine in with a "gearbox malfunction" a few days past the 3 year warranty, with <8000 miles on the clock, I pointed out that I thought I knew what it was* and that Audi US had done a safety recall on all S4/S5's with the identical engine and drivetrain when some of them had shown exactly this error, with various extremities of the impact when the mechatronic failed.

*(where it failed shifting 1 to 2, gave an error code and was left with only 1,3,5,7 - indicating a "known problem" with mechatronic failure)

The Audi UK dealership were very non-committal, but I knew the service agent from a lot of previous visits with my A3 and A4 and he did say it was off the record, but he would try to make sure Audi picked up as much as was appropriate - but if it was a new/unknown issue is would only be a small percentage of the total.

They were pretty good on comms - let me know they needed to order parts, apologised for the delay, etc... I went to pick the car up (nearly a week later), the paperwork confirmed new mechtronics, but was devoid of any prices and they just handed the keys back with a comment of, "thank you for your patience and really sorry any inconvenience". Result! That's about £3000 worth of parts + work!

I'm not a huge fan of dealers after them repeatedly squirming out of "bodywork warranty" when I've had premature paint blistering on my last two cars, but that one gesture has transformed my opinion of them - for the time being at least!

I was coming home from work tonight in my 16 plate 272 A6 (7500 miles), was waiting at lights, went to take off (foot off brake) and got a amber 'gearbox malfunction ok to continue driving warning'. Drove home about 0.5 miles and rung Audi who told me to ring Audi Assistance who send an AA guy out.

The code was something about the gearbox temp sensor. He just cleared it and reckons chances are it won't come back and it was a one off. I have taken it for a couple of drives and it has not popped up again.

Not sure what to do next? take to Audi who will probably not do anything without the fault code or just drive it and if it happens again then take it in? Hopefully if it comes back it is just a sensor as the box is pretty much new.

Any one else experienced this? what would you do?

Different to mine - once mine popped the first time, it instantly took half the gearbox offline and it did it EVERY time afterwards. Error message just said Gearbox Malfunction, but nothing about temp sensors. Not sure on the ODB scanner as didn't have my ELM in those days and never bothered getting VCDS plugged in.

Been driving around since I got my initial warning and it has not shown up again, touch wood it was just a random glitch

Can I ask do you have any noticeable bumps when changing from 1 to 2 or 3 to 2?

Nope, all smooth. In sport mode is aggressive on down shifts but nothing out of the ordinary. Why's that?
