Managed to fix it without buying the costly repair kit and without velcro or magnets!

- get one of these. the finish is not as tactile nor as flat as the original audi part but the fit is fine

- using a plastic pry tool or similar (mine are bojo), gently pry apart the plastic from the upper leather part. you will lose two of the catches that keep the plastic flush with the upper but once the latch is in its hard to notice
- insert new catch. needs a bit of a wiggle but once the upper and lower parts are prised apart you have enough space to work in
- push together the upper and lower parts
- admire work and revel in the fact that your stuff wont spill out in the rear passenger footwells anymore
