Hi all
I hope you can help. I had new brakes and discs fitted to my audi however shortly after they started making a squealing noise. I took the car back to the garage and they just cleaned them up and sent me on my way. The noise had gone but shortly came back. They eventually changed the front discs and pads under warranty but the what sounded like the rear was still making a noise so once again took it back so they could replace rear under warranty but this time they told me the rear caliper was sticking which was causing this. So had that replaced along with new discs and pads on rear but still making a slight noise I think from rear when pressing down on brake lightly so not sure what to think. Now seems they have replaced a caliper for nothing! Any ideas?

I'd check they've put plenty copper grease on the points where the pads contact the calipers first, I'd be surprised if they haven't though as that's newbie stuff.

Failing that id give the brakes some real hammer and see if the good old Italian tune up will bed them in and get rid of the noise.

This time of year seems to generate lots of brake enquiries. First off, brakes are critical items, so unless you're confident dismantling and rebuilding then leave it to an independent specialist.

With roads being damp, frosty mornings, and road salt being thrown down is it any wonder there are issues?

Not all brake rotors and pads are the same. Brembo, Zimmermann and Bosch, that's what I tend to use these days.

Take the car for a run and coast to a stop. Now check the brake rotors for heat. The rotors are normally in contact with the friction pads, so they may be slightly warm, but definately not hot. Try that and let us know.

New pads and discs take time to bed in, at least a week or a couple of hundred miles in my book to get bite. Any score marks on your new discs?

You could always try some''anti squeal shims''?. They cured the horrible squeal from the ''standard'' RS3 brakes when i had that.

Audi OE brakes have a reputation for squealing - mine certainly do. The solution seems to be to use none OE parts. I plan to use EBC pads at the next service.

Brake squeal is usually if not ALWAYS in my experience between the brake caliper pistons and brake pad back-plate (demonstrated many times with an 8P RS3 and I still have the photos to prove) and is why Mintex have produced an easy fit alternative to the usually rubbish anti-squeal shim fitted to OEM brake pads. For example see eBay item #251292559571:

Antisqueal shims

Used so many of these on 8P RS3's and always successful:

Alternatively use a better brake pad and I strongly recommend Ferodo Eco-Friction, see:

And: https://www.ferodo.co.uk/products/light-vehicles/eco-friction-brake-pads.html

Using these on our TT, SQ5, and 8P RS3 and find them just brilliant for road work

Low £s price and low dust with masses of low-speed 'bite' :racer:

And Dippy, I no longer use EBC brake pads! Always found 'em GREAT 'out-of-the-box' - but that maybe the 'bedding-in compound - and recommended RedStuff for the 8P RS3 for years but after a while I find the low-speed 'bite' just falls away dramatically. I've recently changed several 8P RS3 cars from RedStuff to Ferodo Eco-Friction and all with positive feedback; a tad more dust than RedStuff, maybe, but with much improved and reliable low speed 'bite.' And QUIETLY too :yahoo:

Ferodo Eco-Friction sure stop my SQ5 well from ALL speeds.

Took it back to the garage and had another moan. They replaced them with Brembos and problem solved. Thanks for your comments. Knowledge is power.
