So I am noticing my gear changes in low gears are somewhat strange. Car revs up in 1st then revs drop again before it changes to second. Seems to change up at differents points each time.
Is this normal for the tiptronic box?
I can also feel the changes

Anyone have any thoughts on this please

Have you tried removing the tuning box, see if that is causing the issue.

Yeah I have. But it's done the same since I bought the car 9 months ago. I'm wondering if it's just the way this box it

Try an oil change on gearbox

Beat me to it ;)

I have mine, with 74k on the clock in for the fluid, filer, sump gasket and plug replacement this week - lot of money on the parts, but hopefully worth the effort &expense. I dread it when a manufactuer says a gearbox is 'sealed for life'. Even the gearbox manufacturer (ZF) recommends a change at 80,000 - 120,000 km's

You have to take into account want the manufacture believes to be the "life of a car" and I'm sure Audi are 7 years and 100K miles, because after that they just don't care.

As above on the service. With the car having a tuning box which also the last owner could also have fitted and removed either own tuning box then the gearbox could have seen a hard life so could be in desperate need of a service.

We have our car back now, so if you’d like me to film the Rev counter while pulling away, I’d be happy to. Just need to persuade the Wife to go out in the cold to film it, lol

That would be awesome mate. And really appreciated.
No rush though, lol don't upset your Mrs.
I've had a quote for a gearbox oil change .430 quids which is a lot but when you consider there is like 8 litres of oil then it's not that bad. Will save up for a few months I think.

Just had by gearbox serviced this week @ Votex. They used the genuine ZF service pack, made a big difference on my car, probably one of those things which gradually deteriorates over time, so the comparison to before and after makes the £400+ bill actually feel like good value!

Here’s a video of my rev counter as I move through the gears. Not sure it’ll be much help, but maybe at least confirmation that yours needs attention, or otherwise.

Thanks Paul. I really appreciate you taking the time to film this, I will try to take a video of mine to compare. Yours deafo seems to up shift sooner and revs seem more stable.
You seem quite light on the throttle, do you depress the pedal to a point and hold it there or a gradual increase? If you know what I mean

I'm seriously considering a gearbox oil change but the Mrs thinks 400 quid is ridiculous when Audi say it's sealed. Especially when car needs a normal service and mot in a couple of months along with 2 new tyres soon.....

No worries at all. I was driving quite sedately so that you could see the gear changes easier and there would be longer gaps between them.

I just depress the pedal gradually, no feathering or letting off really in the video.

I see the point - £400 is a lot of money for an oil change, but I figure the value of the car probably justifies it. A gearbox oil change will be good on the service history and it’s a lot cheaper than fixing problems with the box or worse yet, replacing it in a year or two if it starts playing up.

Tell the Mrs how much a replacement gearbox is if/when yours fails!

This is a statement form ZF web site. https://www.zf.com/unitedkingdom/en...orporate/oil_change_kits/oil-change-kits.html

You have to remember what Audi consider the life of a car (past the point then they don't care less) and it's 7 years from memory, so 8 years is well past the point of not giving a .....

That last vid looks very lumpy mate, I take it that was a steady throttle position? Revs should drop from cog to the next but not in 2 jumps which looks like what happening.

How is it from pull away? Do you get lock up from 3rd (ie not slip from the torque converter)

Any recommendations for a gear box service in the west mids, approaching 60k in mine and if I do t jump down an s6 route, would like to Change mine to keep it fresh

Yeah it does seem to drop revs between gears a little more and more erratically. Have you had it scanned for faults?

Yeah I scan the car regularly and nothing coming up.
Stuck as what to do next. Email the clip to ZF maybe they can offer some advice.
Or take it to a gearbox specialist

Couldn’t hurt to email them for advice, good idea. If no joy, then at least you’ve tried before spending out for a specialist to investigate.

They can do an oil change if they recommend it, but it would be a shame to spend £400 on an oil change if it doesn’t help & then have to take it to a gearbox specialist as well.

Keep us posted.

It does look like a mechatronic problem in the box, as that swaps the ratios and that doesn’t look smooth, oil changes generally will sort that from what I’ve read, but that’s just my view.

Apologies my description wasnt the best lol, It’s where the revs rise on pull away and speed catches up, the torque converter (Big *** sprung coupling) sits between gear box and wheels and allows the engine to pull the car away from stationary, first 2 gears generally slip and then higher gears locks , when the mechatronic is having problems it can allow slip (revs rise but low speed increase) in lots of gears.

No locking up and power delivery does not seem to be held back it's just the revs are up and down and bit and don't seem to match the gear shifts. I need to convince the wife the oil needs changed in the box. Lot of money though u know

I have also just realised another symptom.
When stopped on a decent with the car in drive and foot on brake there is a small thud or jolt once of twice which feels like 1st gear settling if you know what I mean.
I'm really worried about this now

Does it in D and S but not in manual

For me that indicates the box needs to be serviced.

£430 for a gearbox oil change. I've just had mine done for £225 at an Audi dealer.

There is a big difference between the stronic & tiptronic boxes, the oil for the tiptronic box is far more expensive.

I think the 8 speed ZF box also holds like 8 litres of the stuff

You will be paying around the £400 for the ZF box, and if your worried about then box then go to a true ZF specialist like Mackie Transmissions https://www.mackie-transmission.com/ You want someone who knows these boxes inside and out, not just someone who can just change the oil.
