Hello all!

I have a slight issue with my bi-xenon headlights on my a4.
I have retrofitted them the other day, which went quite smoothly tbh, done all necessary coding but for some reason the high beams will not stay on.
If I switch them on, they will switch off after a second or two.
Any ideas what could be causing this or what to check?
All input would be much appreciated!

Thanks!
Adam

Wires connected ?
Connected to 21/22 on control module
VCDS programmed as it makes a difference

yes mate, all connected and coded! Seems quite odd as they come on for a second and then go off, makes me think there's a short circuit somewhere.
I might take them apart and have a look inside.

Thanks Desertstorm, I'll have a read! Still why would they switch on for a moment before they go off...

VCDS will show a short

It will say + to earth on fault code of the module

Mine did that before I moved it from halogen to zenon in VCDS.

Think I have a spare auto light module if you need it to try

I did have to rewire a headlamp as previous person had used leds and mounted a resistor inside which had melted the wiring

Was causing all types of issues

thanks Jasesapphy! I had a look inside the headlights and found a broken clip inside which I fixed but made no difference to my problem unfortunately.
Where is the headlight module located mate? is there any way of telling which one I have?

Have you run the 2 wires needed to the plug in the drivers footwell (comfort module)

I have, which seems to work good with the shutters.
After that re-coded the ECU for xenon lights with no DRLs.

So
Do
Xenons work on low beam
Xenons work on flash (shutters open)?
Side lights work?
DRL's work?

Xenons dont stay on when stalk pushed opposite way?

The lights will only flash in Auto mode and day light.
Turn the switch to main headlamp and now try?

if that doesnt fix it, get the code off your comfor module (the module you plugged the 2 wires in)
It will have number like
8E0907279L

exactly, all lights work. Shutters work (for about a second) if I flick the switch to high beams they'll come on and switch off after a second even though the stalk is still in high beam position.

What does VCDS say when you run fault codes on module?

Ran it and shows no faults, went into measuring blocks and when you activate high beams it does switch to 'ON' and remains showing 'ON' even after they flick back to low beams.

Do you think there is a fault within the shutter mech in the headlamp?

Only other issue is wiring fault

shutters seem to open fine, and I'm quite sure the wiring is ok too.
I might try to measure voltage going to the shutter when I turn the high beam on.
If the voltage is constant, it will mean its the shutter motor - which would be odd as they both switch off at the same time.

Still need to check which control module I have though, do you know if they were any different between xenon and halogen?

I don't I am afraid
When I got my xenon's the guy sold it with a xenon module, I didn't need it
I can send you my spare as a last resort

Did you use the Kufatec looms?

I had a slight development on this, so hopefully going in the right direction.
Plugged in my VCDS today again and it came back with a fault with the xenon shutters saying "02450 Bi Xenon shutter solenoid (F320) 29-00 Short to ground".

I assume this is causing me the issue, just need to find where the short is!
any suggestions?

Bingo

Check for melted wiring in the headlamp, ground melted to one of the wires

A continuity test from pin 21/22

Wiring block damage or crack causing an arc

Is one of he two wires you ran back chaffed on the body work?

Just had a quick check of the wires but can't see anything obvious. I'll take the lights out again over the next weekend and hopefully will be able to find the fault!
