I have just bought a 1.8TQS with 145k on the clock. What oil should I be using a fully synthetic or semi synthetic? I used to use Synta silver on my old 1.8T AEB just wanted to check to see if that was still the best bet.

I run castrol edge 5w 40 which is full synthetic and changed every 4000 miles

Yes mate. Probably bought with my heart rather than my head as there are a few bits that need sorting. These include

ABS controller
Thermostat
Rear wheel bearing
Oil service

Will get some pictures up and the full spec when I get a chance. I can't believe it was 8 years ago I joined this site when I bought my first Audi.

well got the oil changed today. Picked up some Quantum Platinum 5W40 from the local VW stealers as the Audi stealer doesnt stock it! Glad I changed the oil immediately as it looked well overdue and they had used a Motorquip filter. The OEM filter was about twice the size. Anyhow pressure came back up instantly and no nasty noisys from the hydraulic tappets so hopefully the engine is free of sludge.

Next jobs will be the thermostat and rear wheel bearing. Oh and there appears to be some coolant leaking around the oil cooler, is this just the clips going weak over time?

keep an eye on the color of the oil. If it starts turning black get it changed and keep doing so until it starts lasting a proper time and staying golden.

You sure it's the rear wheel bearing?
I thought this on wife's 80k miles, specialist looked at it and said no..... but the rear lower wishbone bushes were worn, reckon that it needed new and then the noise would go ( also odd wear pattern on tyres).

Well, had new tyres ( bought Goodyear assymetric2 this time) and immediately the rumbling has stopped . So it's about to get new bushes and an alignment.

Same with the cooler and traces of coolant ( sort of pinkish ), keeping an eye on it but the oil is fine and I think it's just a slight weep from the hose/clips. It's been like this for several yaers but no real loss of coolant.
By the way apparently there is an even bigger filter that fits , think it is from the 2.5TDi vans?? 074 115 561 is the part number, must hols at least anothe half a liter of oil !
