Been told I can't get an exhaust for a 2005 A4 s-line!

Hi

My local garage has told me I need a new exhaust and it's not possible to get one as they are on back order at the audi dealer. There's no time frame as to when they will get them in. Fortunately they've patched it to get it through the MOT as it has rusted at the point where it joins the cat. Rest of exhaust is fine annoyingly (it's the 2.0 petrol FSI engine so has the twin boxes at the back). But they have said it's a temp fix and i really want it done properly. I don't fancy waiting and they mentioned there are places that would do a stainless steel exhaust. Does any one know where I could source this part, stainless or otherwise?

We love our audi and can't believe you can't get an exhaust, even if it's a 10 year old car.

Where abouts are you located?

Someone local might be able to advise of a place who will be able to do you a custom stainless exhaust - this way you can either have the parts replaced which need replaced, or a bespoke system made to your specification with your own choice of tailpipes.

There will be various 'off the shelf' stainless systems which you could choose from, the Milltek mentioned above would be a popular choice but, personally speaking, it wouldn't be something i'd choose as you'll pay a massive 'brand tax' just for the name....... money which I don't particularly think is worth spending - but that's personal preference.

Hi chaps,

Thanks for your advice. I'm based near Kelvedon, Essex so I think there's a few places (romford etc) that do this kind of thing. I'll dig around but really wanted to hear any advice from the community before making what would be a dartboard choice about something.

Would you get the part and have a trusted garage to fit it, or is it better to get the guys who specialise in this sort of thing? Sorry if these are noob questions.

Many thanks

Depends on what you're really looking for but I'd agree with Erik, find a nice custom exhaust place and they'll be able to either repair what you have or build something to suit your needs for a decent price.
For comparison I went from a single rear box to a S4 style quad tips(twin boxes) in stainless from the cat back and paid around £250 from my local custom exhaust place, they also built it with a large centre box as I wanted stock levels of quietness. For me Milltek are a joke, unless you're seriously chasing every bhp and like bragging about owning one I'd avoid them unless you have serious cash to burn.

AMD Technik are at Lakeside, next to Ikea and can supply/fit Milltek exhausts. If you didn't already know, they a top aftermarket company for all things VAG and seem to know more about our cars than Audi dealers.

Me too. I replaced a Milltek on my S4 with a custom stainless from a local exhuast builder (Tony Banks in Leeds) and the quality is MUCH better than the Milltek. Sounds nicer too as the Milltek had an awful drone at cruising speeds. Selling my Milltek second hand almost paid for the new exhaust, so that shows how over priced they are.

My advice would be to google exhaust fabricators in your area and get one custom made at a fraction of the price of a new 'big brand' exhaust, certainly much cheaper than a new one from Audi. The advantage of doing this is that you can also choose the tailpipe size and design as well as how loud/quiet you want it.

I've never really understood why folk are so willing to take a fisting just to be able to say they've got a Milltek.

Get a GOOD custom exhaust and you'll make as much power as a milltek, have something which looks how YOU want it and be left with a load of Wonga in your pocket to spend on enjoying your car.

Get a custom one, make sure its made using a good grade of stainless (we use 316L with the same grade of rod for tig welds), and probably most importantly - make sure you get someone who'll do mandrel bends rather than crushed ones.

TBH, I'm more than happy with my Milltek, it fits well, sounds good and has definitely made an improvement in the cars performance

Don't think I've said at any point that a milltek was a 'pile of *****'.......?

All I said was that I didn't think they represented value for money and offered the boy a cheaper alternative. Given that the guy was just looking to replace a standard exhaust (or perhaps even just part of a standard one), I don't think offering up a top end exhaust system is necessarily the best advice......

Apologies for trying to help.

Just being fecisious, it was just some forum banter apologies if I upset you. However I didn't quote you or anyone else saying they were ***** did I? I also apologise for trying to be helpful too, Milltec seem to be a popular choice on here so thought I could be confident in recommending them but seems I was wrong. I didn't think I was giving bad advice but how wrong was I!

Think we're getting confused here, Milltek are good but expensive exhausts, Milltec are the Asian replica of Milltek so no doubt a bit cheaper.

Sorry couldn't resist!!

As mentioned above a good quality stainless steel 316 exhaust tig welded with same quality rod will look the ****** and last you a lifetime + leave some cash in your pocket as well. If you need one made or even yours repaired properly then give me a ring, i am based in N. London and made quite a few exhausts... Regards,
Chris.

Yikes! My stainless cat back for an S4 (dual exit) was only £500 and that's with 3 big mufflers (the expensive bits) as I like my exhaust quiet. I'd be willing to drive from Sheffield to Leeds in order to get a better deal...

I have paid £500 before (dual exit} for a stainless with them and i thought this was expensive, have been quoted by someone else in Sheffield nearly £900 and that was for a 2.5" cat back

When was that, in the last ice age? I know this sort of specialist work is a lot cheaper up north but can't imagine a S4 exhaust at that price.
