I personally didn't think they would lose the supercharged unit but it turns out they have.

Announced today at the Frankfurt Motor Show

I personally love the supercharged motor but clearly this new configuration has a huge tuning potential.

Who's getting one then?

Details below

Audi has revealed its hottest new A4 yet at Frankfurt show with new turbo 3.0-litre V6 S4, on sale in 2016
Audi is hoping to draw in some of the crowds at the Frankfurt Motor Show with the all-new S4 saloon. The newcomer is expected to go on sale at the start of 2016, and is more powerful and efficient than any car to wear the S4 badge before.

The biggest news is that the new Audi S4 ditches the outgoing car's supercharged unit in favour of a turbocharged 3.0-litre direct-injection V6. Power is of course up, from 328bhp to 349bhp, and crucially torque is also boosted from 440Nm to 500Nm.

While those are fairly typical increases for an all-new model, don't forget weight is also down by around 120kg thanks to the new MLB Evo platform on the standard A4. That and the Quattro permanent four-wheel drive system means 0-62mph is dealt with in 4.7 seconds, with an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.

Those figures aren't quite enough to worry the BMW M3, but Audi will come in all guns blazing with the full-fat RS4 in 2017. For now, the S4 is considered a relatively warm rather than 'hot' saloon, and the mild styling upgrades reflect that. Audi itself admits the reprofiled front and rear bumper are subtle, but the quad tailpipes show the sporting intent.

Inside, there's leather and alcantara 'S' sports seats, illuminated door sill trims and brushed aluminium finishings, with features like the 12.3-inch 'Virtual Cockpit' digital instruments from the regular A4.

I quite like the look of it. As much as most would prefer a V8 still :( im sure it will shift nicely!

but will there be a manual transmission?

Nevermind, just read the second article link. 8spd ZF only

Some reports say 354bhp

so 354 PS then (Pferdestärke) = 349BHP

The big question is how much capacity is there in the turbo's / fuel system for remapping.
Surprising that there is only one gearbox option an automatic that's not a DSG. Looks like Audi are saving some pennies and going for an off the shelf gearbox rather than trying to keep up with the DSG option. But with torque increases maybe a more traditional auto box is the way to go.
Finally the V6T badges are correct.

I love the way that marketing figures perpetuate even though the data shows otherwise. When we first heard about the new MLB platform we were indeed told to expect a weight saving of up to 120kg. Now that the brochure is out, the best I could find for the models that I could compare like-for-like is 110kg. Now yes that is good, but generally the saving is less. Of course we don't have the S4 brochure yet, but the PH article states that the S4 Avant will be 1675kg. If true, it means that for that model the weight saving is only 75kg. Again, its great to have that saving but it does mean that the Autoexpress article is misleading.

I will readily admit that I want to have reasons not to like the B9 in order to justify my recent purchase of a B8. However I am not having to try hard coming up with the reasons. I'm OK with the exterior styling but dislike the interior (but I'd get used to it). However finding out that the OTR price of a 2.0 TFSI B9 s-line Avant with identical options (no new toys) is MORE than my S5 Sportback makes me realise that a B9 S4 Avant might cost £15K more than I paid for my S5 even without new options such as the virtual cockpit. But finally it is simply the fact that unless those articles didn't mention it, this new V6 biturbo will not have electric turbos. I have already experienced a tuned B5 V6 biturbo and I am so much convinced that the 3.0 TFSI supercharged engine is better than a biturbo.

I'd imagine a fair bit of turning avaliable. The S6/7 have the same 4ltr V8 biTurbo as the S8 but the 6 and 7 make 420hbp vs 520bhp in the 8.

If I remember correctly the RS4 will be going down the 3ltr V6 biTurbo route too and will output much more power, so as is normal they will hold the S4 back to keep model range steps intact.

The other thing is the change from s-tronic to tiptronic. I guess I'm more impressed by the s-tronic since I came from a manual, however after reading up on the tiptronic I can't help feeling that it is a backward step.

Without doubt the B9 S4 will have a higher potential for tuned peak power and torque than the B8 S4. For those who don't mind lag that is great. For me the broad torque curve coupled with the s-tronic makes for a better drive. Just my opinion. I'll not go back to turbos until they are electric.

I was wrong it's a single turbo according to EVO. Shame.

Looks nice and I'm sure it will be, but I think the B8/8.5 S4 looks more muscular and brawny. I'd like to see the B9 with Audi's black optics package too.

Personally I still like mine better but it certainly doesn't look like they have ruined the S4 with the B9. Just some sharper lines inside and out. The new turbo and the lighter weight sound nice, but 0-60 time is the same as B8. Is that because of no launch control?

Hear-Vier

B5 then a B8.5
The fuel tank for the new 2.0tfsi fwd is quoted as 54 litres and oddly 58 litres for the quattro. Assuming the same for the S4 means 3 litre smaller tank, pretty small for a biggish car but I guess it all helps with the fuel economy numbers. Brochure could be wrong though, it was wrong in the B8.5 version I had.

The new S4 might tempt me back to Audi. Love my current car - but there's something about a fairly quick Audi Avant. Please tell me the screen does fold down when not in use.

If the 8 speed ZF is as good as the BMW set up then personally I'd prefer that to S-tronic. The A4 brochure said the 8 speed tiptronic was used with torque over 400nm.

I don't think it does but a hammer will fix it :p

I'm not convinced about the B9. Other than the interior being updated it doesn't make me think my old b8.5 is long in tooth. I think I'd miss the SC whine too much

I understand orders are being taken from early in the new year with first deliveries in the summer.

I hope they come up with some more interesting colours for the S4, Sepang at least or even better Ara Blue, as the range on the standard A4 is pretty uninspiring.

I noticed that but they also have issued pictures of standard A4's in a similar colour but the colour is not available to order.
They did the same with the TT recently and kept the best colours for the TTS.
It looks like Ara Blue as well so there is hope.

Do you think there will be £9K discounts like there were with the last B8 S4s sold and is currently available for the B8 S5?

Absolutely! But probably not until around 2022, just before the B10 comes out, and everyone complains it looks like the B9...

A 9k discount would be nice but I doubt it although I expect there will soon be some price movement on list.
I did nearly order a B8 S4 in the spring at a very attractive price but in the end I felt it would be better to wait. I already have a B8.5 3.0 Tdi and so it was not a massive upgrade to an S4 to justify it.
Having just upgraded my Golf from a Mk6 to a MK7 the differences are transformational and in particular in roadholding, interior quality and technology. I expect the B9 to be the same if not to a greater extent as the B8 design is 7 years old.

Same show as Bristle Hound's video above, but this one gives a pretty decent walkaround inside and out.

Quilted Diamond Stitching on the seats looks titties!
