strangely last week there was a slight hissing noise intermittently from behind the dash - it sort of sounded like aircon or seat bolster pneumatic pump.... it didn’t bother me!

Anyway a week on and I decided to use turn the air con to cold ( it was sunny today in Cardiff) . I should say that the air con is constantly on in the car so I shouldn’t have suffered from dry seals etc.

I understand that air con is supposed to be serviced every two years and that the air con hardware is still under warranty.

So really I’m just interested to hear if anyone has needed a regas or has anyone had any real problems with their air con systems?

    Thanks in advance

No problem here, puzzled why you turned the CC to cold as there is no need. If the cabin temperature is too hot the CC will automatically pump out more, cooler air anyway...

Obviously I turned the temperature to low because the car wasn’t automatically reducing the temperature to a comfortable level. Once on low it became immediately apparent that the air from the vents wasn’t any cooler regardless of the set temp.

Something wrong then and you need to have this looked at as mine is left continuously on 20c and performs well. However mine is serviced when it should be, hissing does suggest low gas..

Mine's on its second re-gas. First time they blamed a high pressure sensor, replaced and re-gassed, second time they've put tracer dye in with a re-gas. Working for now.

Just a comment concerning the opening posting, these compressors are driven 100% of the time that the engine is running, they are all variable displacement type so when and if "OFF" will still be pumping a minimal volume of refrigerant and oil round the system.

As far as chilling is concerned, a car AC system will keep on running/working without any "servicing" until the losses are high enough to stop it working effectively - the more urgent aspect of servicing will probably be killing off any accumulated bacteria but that depends on how you use the system, ie if you do not allow it to defrost and dry out the plenum area at the end of a journey.

Well that’s interesting that the system is always active! That’s something worth knowing.

The car was regassed today and it’s blowing cold again ( no bad smells fortunately) . I find it odd tho that a car two years old requires a regas yet my 12 year old Subaru has never required a regas and the old mans 20 year old vw Passat is the same! Perhaps the older type of refrigerant is more stable / effective ?

Strangely Audi didn’t attempt to sell me a cabin filter - actually, id like to check that ! And I would if I could find it ..... does anyone know?

Yeah so it was pressure tested ! Held pressure, so no leaks ! I don’t think I’ll be paying Audi prices once it’s out of warranty but while there was chance that the system was faulty and things were covered I didn’t mind handing them my money ! Actually for a regas and pressure test Audi were 40 quid less expensive than some the mobile and independent air con specialists around Cardiff !

My last air con service was £65, four quid cheaper than our fiesta. So I don't think that £32.50 per year is in anyway breaking the bank..

The 'new' gas is considerably more expensive than the old refrigerant and many places don't have the right machines yetyet .

I’ve had the exact same problem with my 66 plate avant. A strange hissing noise on turn on from vents and no cold air.

Bought a groupon deal before I realised its the expensive gas!

Rang Audi today and they want to charge me a £60 diagnostic fee if nothing other than a Regas is found. £90 for clean and gas.

Cardiff Audi quoted 145 for diagnostic pressure test and re-gas ! I haggled a bit and it came down - I’m quite sure I was still ripped off !
Still , it was under warranty and independent places wanted to charge 160-180 for diagnostic pressure test and gas so for once Audi seemed reasonable!

Good news is it was fixed with new gas ! No additional parts required so all in all I’m happy.... but I certainly won’t be paying that after the warranty runs out !

They recovered 70g instead of the 540 that was meant to be in there. So it was a leak. Had a squeaking belt too so they’re stripping the engine to replace the belts. They’ve put a dye in to try and find the leak. Hopefully all done under warranty. Got a nice A6 Avant 50 Quattro that goes like stink as a courtesy car.
