B8 Avant going crazy

Hi Guys,

My 2011 model 2.0 TDI Avant is going crazy, sometimes it will not start, and the errors that come up on the dash are as follows; Stability program fault, Parking brake fault, headlight range control defective.

The car either starts first thing or it wont and then the errors come up on the dash, if the car starts it drives 100% normal, no limp mode, nothing strange, also no errors appear when driving, they only come on start up. When the 3 errors come up on the dash screen the engine cooling fan also turns on and goes nuts, it will only turn off if I remove the key from the car and close/open it again. Sometimes it will even continue to blow a bit and I need open/close it a second time or put the key back into the car to stop the fan blowing.

I went to see a fiend of mine to see it with vagcom, and this is the result, we're lost as we can't figure it out, we tried looking for the ECU relay, which is mentioned online for other models as 109, but we couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone know where it might be?

Interesting problem. Hope you find track down the issue.
Hopefully these will help from Elsa Win.
The ECU power relay is J317 it's relay D located in the box where the ECU. See the attached diagrams.

The fault is around the engine ECU as the can-gateway has error about communication to the ECU & missing Powertrain Data Bus which again is generated by the engine ECU. it could be a bad ECU, water damage to some of plugs going into the ECU or relay. Another thing to try is to reseat the plugs going into the engine ECU.

A guy on a Spanish forum said to check Relay J329 too it's Terminal 15 voltage supply, so I guess that could have an effect too.

OK so update, although nothing great.

I substituted the relay for the ECU with one from the boot, and no joy, and I changed the J329 one for a new one as there was none to substitute with.

What did happen though is I could start 3/4 times, and then I got an error only just the ESP one, and it still let me start the car, the handbrake and lights were gone for another 3 attempts after, and then they came back and it wont start again. The errors only appear on the dash when I try to start it they do not appear when it runs.

Another thing I noticed is when I unplug the negative on the battery and wait a bit, when reconnecting it then starts OK again a couple of times, and then it's back to square 1.

Seeing as the car is half apart, I did notice that the relay for the glow plugs and engine current makes a lot of clicks before when I start and it doesn't, in the notes it says it's for this:

A - Automatic glow period
control unit -J179-
→ Note
A - Engine components
current supply relay
-J757- → Note → Note

If the glow plug light goes out then I can start, if it stays on it wont start and the other errors also come up.

I'm lost, I guess I'm just looking way to deep into it as now everything seems to do something.

Doubt that it will help anyone as it's not great use, but in this case my ECU was bad and a replacement was needed.

Hi, thanks for reporting back with the solution. It may help somebody in the future.
With such a random and unusual fault I would have thought the an ECU issue was a possibility but obviously that would be expensive, and you would like to do more diagnostics and maybe some replacement of cheaper components before condemming the ECU.
Had the car been mapped, as if it had been removed and opened there is a possibility that damage could have been done to the ECU at this point.
