Alright folks, need a wee bit of help.

My local VAG specialists have just had my inlet manifold replaced on my B7 RS4, they've had it back on and all of a sudden after idling for 30 - 40 seconds they gave it a few thousand revs and a rattling noise started at the back of the engine so they turned it off. They turned it on again and the rattling started again as well.

The engine hasn't been started in 2 weeks and they did a compression test on all the cylinders to see about any valve damage and all was where it was supposed to be.

Does this sound like a timing chain tensioner on the way out to anyone else? Or does anyone have any experience on this?

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance :)

different engine, but there's similar post from a few days back in the B7 section about engine rattles etc that goes over tensioners, sensors, and camshaft positioners iirc, might be of interest...

Well it's getting a bit ridiculous now.

According to the garage, they seem to think it's a sticky valve.

Because of the amount of carbon on the valves they think it's one I the exhaust valves sticking, they've had a boroscope down every cylinder with no sign of impact damage, so they're pulling the engine forward to get the exhaust manifold off to have a peek, and they're hand cleaning the carbon off as they go, if they haven't got it running by Wednesday, I'm going to have to take it to an S/RS specialist in Edinburgh who have told me they do a full de-coke for £360 + VAT, I'm massively missing the car now :(
