Evening all,

Has anyone in Devon had a gear box and diff oil change / service?

Also how much should I expect to pay?

I am interested in what others have to say and hopefully you will get someone local to you. I was quoted over £500 to get it done by a specialist (Scotland so not much help) and currently despite feeling I didn't want to do it myself I am thinking I might. So I am looking around for Oil and the relevant parts at a reasonalble price. I want to get good quality stuff but just at the best price I can find. If I can get the parts together I may still try to get a decent mechanic to do it for me but the more expensive it gets the more likely I am doing it myself, is the way it is looking at the moment.

I was in Audi today with the Mrs, she is looking at chopping her 118d in for a Q2. some good deals (Even BMW were offering a £329 Deposit and £230pm for 48 months for a 140i!!!!!)

Anyway I asked about a service, he brought up my car as the previous bloke did it all at audi, last service was Nov 2016! I asked about a gear box service for the quattro he said it will never need it but could do a full service for £399 no MOD discount, I asked what as the service he said, Oil change, Oil and fuel filter, air filter if needed and a 40 point check. What a rip off!!!!

This is the old "sealed for life" story, Audi have mine listed as this and refused to do it when I asked. The Gearbox specialist I spoke to (incidentally a ZF specialist/agent) said originally ZF said there was no need to change the oil but due to issues over the years sincethey were made they have now agreed that the oil should be changed regularly. Also if you do a search, you will find most enthusiasts and mechanics don't agree with sealed for life either and recommend regular changes. The feeling seems to be "Life" is the length of the Audi manufacturers warranty i.e. 3 years and I for one would hope to get more than that out of my Gearbox and car.

Agree, My E46 was a ZF box and my local indi suggested I get a flush and change, just struggling to find someone in devon to do it.

It was pleasing to see all my history on the Audi computer. I won't be using Audi for service though!

Don't know how close these are to you;
http://www.cdtransmissions.com/
http://www.exetergearboxcentre.co.uk/
http://www.southwesttransmissions.com/ogle id your friend and all that
Don't know anything about any of them but they should like possibilities, Google is your friend and all that. I think I found my local one throught the ZF site, sure there was a lionk to find your local specialist.

Gazwould asked about oils and specs above, here is my entire knowledge to date as it may benefit you too.
My car is a 2005, it's a ZF 6HP19 transmission, gearbox code; HKL. Specs are 8E1 910 156D, 09L 300 037 L/LX/N. I was advised by Opie, going with my normal quality choices Motul V1 would be a good choice, which is Dexron V1. Audi spec is G05505 A1/A2/A6 orG060162A1/A2orA6. I have no idea what most of this means. ZF oil is Lifeguard 8, I think. Millers are about to bring out a new oil which meets the specs Millers 8000 ATF and some of the E-Bay ones are here; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351415005899?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
No idea if Febi Bilstein oil is any good.
Another possibility, again no idea how good; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331709700795?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
And another, full kit with filter and gaskets this time again no idea about the "German" oil, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272109921530?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
Another one that came up early in my search was Ravenol oil. A company called Blauparts in America do kits, it's worth a look just to see what they do and the options they offer but I thnk to get it from the states to here would be a ridiculous price, also Ravenol seems to get fairly good reviews but from what I have read not really good enough to convince me, so haven't pursued this any further.

A19 cheers bud,

I have a reply from A K Motors in Plymouth about a gear box service.

Here is the reply: it is £555 after discount with VAT.

Dan ,

Thanks for your reply , the oil required for this gearbox is a special oil from audi and the total oil capacity is 9 ltrs which is very expensive £35.40 per ltr ! , you will also require a new gasket for the sump on the gearbox as you need to remove gearbox sump and clean out the filter / strainer inside gearbox , i will price it based on using all the 9 ltrs of oil , and what is not used can be deducted of the final invoice .

Parts

Gearbox oil 9 ltrs , Gasket , Cleaner / lub , Sundries as required £360.42

Labour , remove gearbox sump clean strainer and refit and refill gearbox oil £100.00

Enviroment fee £3.50

Total plus vat £463.92 plus vat

Note
This is a discounted price as price before discounts would be £538.42 plus vat

You can also give me a ring on 01752 335333 and i will be able to explain it better than trying to write it .

Special oil !

The only thing that is special with genuine oil is the price .

What part number is the oil ?

I'll ask, I'm assuming it's straight from Audi. Anyone have any alternatives.

A second garage has offered £280 + Vat, using G 060 162. but its in Exeter.

Evening Team so here are my quotes:

1. A K Motors Plymouth £550 (inc VAT)
2. Devon Gearbox centre Plymouth £594 (inc Vat)
3. Exeter Gearbox centre £562 (inc Vat)

All claim to change oil, filter, gasket, clean out and inspect the gearbox and do the diffs. 1 & 2 claim to use Audi oil only and 3 uses a third party oil.

Do these see ok?

The bottom one includes all new bolts for sump and oil and filter and apparently a sump. until recently was zf on the website but now boge which is zf. you can use 10% discount code, so works at £195 - just need someone to do the labour...
I have also been looking to do this but can't work out if I should use lifeguard 6 or 8

Hi Team,

Just picked up the car from A K Motors in Plympton. All done, Gear box, Both diffs and transfer box oil changed, new gasket and sump washed. Also a free winter check and the se of a courtesy car!!!!

The mechanics mentioned that the car was for its age and milage in good nock, also mentioned the recent new ARBs and some new bushes (ties in with the SH) and that the existing gearbox oil, was looking quite dark, smelt burnt and was thinner than new stuff, on seeing a photo it looked pretty honking.

Came out at £611 and that was with a £117 discount! but I had budgeted a few quid when I set out to buy an Audi so I'm pleased that now all the major "items" have been serviced at 127k. on carrying out a winter inspection (check and top up of liquids) they reported a slight judder when braking, that will be the next dry weather job.

That can be found here and also do re-maps.

I have had mine gearbox oil done twice by the same local guy in Wales. He's based in the Cardiff/Newport/Swansea area. I always have other stuff done but the oil is always pricey but it's a fraction of Audi and of other prices here. If anyone wants the info pm me. Happy to recommend.

Sorry I haven't been on here much of late, not that I am any kind of expert. Glad to hear you got it done, I don't think you will regret it.
You should be able to get your Gearbox code from your data sticker in the service book or boot of the car. Also there is an issue related to flushing the box when they change the oil, I should maybe have said this earlier. 9 litres includes enough oil for the gearbox but that doesn't drain the torque converter, it doesn't gravity drain when you take the drain plug out so there is specialist equipment to put pressure through the system to push out the oil in the TC and re-fill with new oil and this is the correct way to do it but not all garages do this, usually Audi or ZF specialists will be the ones who can. It's not the end of the world if only the geabox gets drained and some people have mixed feelings about the pressure through the system thing and seem to think at times it causes issues in it's self.
If only the gearbox gets done it's only about 7 litres, which mens there will still be about 2 litres of dirty oil in there which will mix wih the new oil on start up, it's not ideal but not a disaster either unless you previoulsy had metal filings or something in you oil i.e. a damaged box. For me to do it myself I wouldn't have the specialist equipment, so I would just be changing the oil in the gearbox sump and I think I am happy enough with this, as the job will get done for the cost of the parts only and I will just make sure it gets regular changes from there on.
Anyway, that's all I would have said if I had been here, I am sure you are not too bothered now with your nice clean gearbox oil already in place, have to say I am a bit jealous, Grrr, nah just kidding, I am genuinely pleased for you, I will get round to mine relatively soon, all the best :)

Cheers A19,

When I picked up the car, they said it would be an extra £50 over the quoted price due to diff oil and the need for more gearbox oil, because of swapping out what was in the TC, So not sure if they pressurised the system or how they cleaned it out, but the garage does a lot of performance car and Rolling road stuff, they did admit to getting the garage next door which is a transmission only garage (next unit) over to give a hand. So I feel quite confident that they did a good job.

Still can't get used to using this auto box, in my 5 speed beemer (E46) yu could put the pedal down and it would accelerate and maybe drop a gear, or use the kick down, pause for a second or two then fly off like a bat out of hell.

With the B7, I seem to get a better or should i say smoother response my pushing the accelerator down to just before kick down and the car flys in 6th or drops to 5th, when i was coming back down the A38 towards plymouth, over Holden hill (massive steep 3 lane hill) I was in 6th and did my BMW trick of pushing the go fast pedal straight to kick down to see how it would deal with a long hill (all within the national speed limit!) and it dropped to 4th, then had a think and clunked in to 5th and we were off. I might just try the paddles.

Just having a nose around the audi website,

So as I mentioned earlier they said they could not carryout a gearbox service on my car because it is "life time sealed", but I just found this, thats better than half price and a audi stamp!!!!

Is this the same oil out oil in service?

or

Am I right in saying that my 2007 By 3.0 Tdi Quattro is Tiptronic and not the same as the S ironic or multi tronic listed below?
Screen Shot 2017 01 28 at 140254

Yep, your car is Tip-Tronic, S-Tronic is Audi's version of DSG I believe. I looked at this before and at times they do discounted deals and there was one on for Tip at the time but when I spoke to my local Audi dealer and they checked my chassis nomber they said they wouldn't do it as it was a sealed for life car. I said, what If I said I want it done anyway and they said, we still would refuse.....brilliant and that's why I am where I am.
I know what you mean about the gearchanges, just takes a bit of getting used to and I do tend to use the paddles just to get the change downs I want for overtaking and so on. For me it's a holiday driving this car as everything else I drive is manual so it's usually a nice weekend rest for me :)

So it's been a week since, the oil change can't say I have noticed any difference, I drove to pompy on Sunday evening (188 miles) no difference, left the car stood since Monday evening, got in it this morning and it was struggling to get in to reverse. Almost as it needed to warm up.

In my simple mind, new oil should be thicker???

But after driving past this my DIS displayed the PRNDS all in red, so I stopped and re-started the car and it was ok. The car had been stood for 3 days and struggled to go in to reverse, still a symptom of new oil?

These were the only faults on the scan. Thoughts?

id take it back to them... also did they do the re adaptation? would recommend getting it plugged into vcds and see if it comes up with any different fault codes.

this is not a common problem. It's been my experience that the most likely failure is the ECM, PCM or transmission control module. There are at least two CAN bus locations in a vehicle. They could be under the carpet, behind the kick panels, under the driver's seat, under the dash or between the A/C housing and center console. They handle communications for all the modules.

So the car going back to the gearbox service garage tomorrow to check the levels and next Monday to a gearbox specialist for a check over. fingers crossed its just low gearbox oil level.

Hi all,

Big thanks to markm, who last week let me pop over and gave the car a proper scan. We found some air bag faults. He re set the gearbox faults. I have to say there has been no pulsing and the gearbox (once warm) is smooth with no jerks and selecting reverse is fine. So do hers crossed that's it.
