AWX A4 B6 1.9 tdi Manual Power Loss/ESP Light (ABS) Juddering at 2-3k rpm with VCDS Scans

Hi Guys,

advice needed;

Fault initially started after having the oil and gunk washed off from the underside of the car. It was washed off lightly with degreaser and a hose, not a pressure washer, but may have got somewhere and shorted/damaged sensor?

The car was juddering with ESP light coming on solid over 1800rpm, but would go out if left to idle.

Drove car home from said cleaning, first 3 miles, kept under 2k rpm due to juddering and snatching like clutch was being let in an out. After few miles with blowers on full heat, got boost back, would drive spirited without issue.

That was a couple days ago. today, had the bungs let out as heard slooshing when reversed, didn't drive car, literally heard the water, parked it up. Battery out, Bungs out, ECU case off, silicone around ecu box seal, then in reverse order back together.

Not inclined to think its vacuum hose related as we had boost back after the first occurrence, Brake Pedal switch in vagcom shows 0 1 1 when pressed, and with clutch down at same time as brake pedal shows 1 1 1, so assume this is fully functional

Previous owner stated he removed the mounts solenoids/along these lines so not fussed about this as it was present prior to this issue.

We are inclined to lean more towards wiring or in the unlikely event a sensor let go, but don't want to meaninglessly replace things.

For reference, the steering angle sensor will not read in VCDS measuring blocks, perhaps it needs to be logged in first?

We are all ears as our mobile mechanic is at a loss, and as he's a friend and funds tight, inclined to stick with him.

So after clearing the codes you're just left with the engine mount & the G85 steering angle.
The engine mount one I've had for ever.

Would you say ESP is kicking in when it shouldn't causing the power to come & go rapidly? making it undriveable?
I had similar, it was very intermittent for a long time, every few months I'd pull away & the car wouldn't go anywhere fast, the eps light would flash (so was kicking in when it shouldn't)
When yours does it, have you tried pressing esp button (to disable it) that did work for mine for a while.
Eventually it got worse & I was at a loss too, it was looking like steering angle sensor (expensive) or an abs sensor giving a false reading.

a mechanic mate used vcds & it wouldn't connect to the steering angle sensor, so I bit the bullet, and luckily a member on here had a used sensor.
That fixed the issue for me.

Not saying it will for you but it does sound very similar, it's pretty easy to swap over if you can get hold of a known working used one.
I also ended up with brake/abs issues too which oddly was fixed by topping up the brake fluid with a teaspoon amount!? and pressing the reservoir switch... don't ask?..

In VCDS you should be able to connect to the steering angle sensor & when you turn the wheel the angle/degrees should change.
Mine showed nothing when turning the wheel & also wouldn't allow a connection to it to try & calibrate it. so took that as it was dead.

UPDATE - Narrowed down specific faults in VCDS/Vagcom

Hi Norris, thanks for the prompt reply. Managed to narrow it down now, the fault codes are as follows that are linked directly to the power loss,

Engine:
16705 - Engine speed sensor (crankshaft sensor) - P0321 35-10 Implausible signal intermittent

ABS:
18266 - Engine speed signal P1858 35-00 Error message from ECU

Unsure where to proceed from here, diagnostics effectively point at crank sensor, which is en route and our mechanic can fit over Xmas, but in my head I just don't see how the crank sensor will cause stuttering and juddering, now happening around 3-3.5k rpm, more noticeably in Gear 1&2. .

Have tried turning ESP off to no avail.

How are you getting on with this, not been on here for a while.
But the above is sounding different to mine so not got much more to suggest. Other than maybe checking each abs/wheel speed sensor reading when the car is moving (or do it the rough way & connect a meter to each sensor connector, spin the wheel & compare voltages!)

Only suggesting that as my car, as well as the esp kicking in randomly it also applied the abs too which was interesting to say the least, i have heard that abs only kicks in at low speed.

Have you confirmed whether it's more an engine splutter/judder or as in my case.. the esp & abs kicking in causing the judder?

Saying all that, hopefully you'll report back that you've solved it by replacing the crank sensor. That may well be the cause of spluttering/juddering i guess
