    Hi all,

Quick question. Does the A3/S3 have an automatic electric tailgate? i.e. push button open and close?

    Thanks - Mark

Yes. Middle button on the key unlocks the tailgate. On the saloon the boot opens, but not on the hatchbacks.

Yeah sorry, that's what I mean't. It just opens and closes by itself, good if you've got lots of shopping etc. Shame not on the sportback :(

    It's not electric

It just 'pops' and the saloon one is sprung so it opens

I think the hatch door would be too heavy, and it would be a bit dangerous.
With the saloon it's great fun surprising people in the supermarket car park - opening the boot when someone's just walking by !! :whistle2:

The SB tailgate is a shocking design

    So nasty and cheap.

Almost as though Audi got to the rear passenger doors and gave up.

Some of the Q models have electric (powered) tailgates which I assume are heavier.
I think this is what @Mark_86 is maybe referring to?

FL A6 and new A4's have power boot options also. All 2016 cars with power boot can be configured to both open and close from the remote fob and internal button via VCDS. Shame Audi have not given this as an option to the A3. There are adaptation channels which would facilitate the retrofitting of a virtual pedal tho, so you can wave your foot under the rear bumper and have the boot pop open :)

You want to hear the pops and bangs (other thread) by putting the seats down AND opening the hatch electronically :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

Ah dammit. I was doing so well...

TBH, putting the seats down is genius... I do this often in the ST and my mpg falls through the floor haha. Shame it damages the leather and leaves little dents

Did that in the ST once to carry something and was quite shocked at how serious the marks were! Was nearly a tear / pinhole. Seems bad design.

I have an A3 (hatch). Holding the centre keyfob button unlocks the tailgate, but it doesn't rise (not spring loaded)

@Mark_86 a powered tailgate would have appealed to me also, if it was an option on the A3. Pretty sure it's an option on the new Q2.

Only sad thing is that they only pop out when opening. No way to close again with the key!

I done this recently while walking back to my car at my local Asda. There was a couple in front of me about to walk past my car so I pressed the button on my remote, but when the boot lid sprung up the guy was so close to the back of my car that it actually hit him on the arm! He got quite a fright then we all laughed.
It never occurred to me that would happen, but clearly he was walking far too close to the back of my car. I decided never to do that again if anybody is close to my car.

While on this subject I am wondering what technique people use to close the bootlid on a saloon model? I hook my fingers into the recess and pull it down with just the right amount of force that it locks shut without slamming(similar to shutting a door), but often I don't give it enough force and it springs back up again....sometimes more than once. :D

Recessed / Inside Handle or reaching up and pushing closed via number plate for me.

Recessed handle or finger on bottom corner of number plate, firmly push down on the boot lid (i hate finger marks in the dirt on the paint work, it's easier to wipe the number plate than wash the whole car), i have nearly whacked my self on the chin before when not pushing it down hard enough though and it springing back up.

Slightly more difficult than fitting a front and rear dash cam.
Biggest hassle is the need to route wires to the front and a round the tailgate lid into luggage area.
    No coding needed.

    No-one's said the obvious?

I thought automatic tailgating was standard for Audi :p

    I'll fetch my coat.

On the bigger Audi’s it’s full electric open and close. On smaller Audi’s it’s just open by way of a spring. In the hatchback it just unlocks doesn’t even spring up. That’s what I miss coming from an a6 with all the toys.

In the q2/3 only gets it on the higher spec ones or with an option package. Definitely wasn’t standard when I looked last year that’s why I decided to get the Land Rover as things like that was standard including reversing camera, park assist etc. even the q5 I had a few years back didn’t have it.
