Hi

Have a '97 1.8 Auto, the gear change on the gearbox is not smooth at all, there are moments where it feels like the gears are "clunking" in to place. Usually happens between 2nd and 3rd and depending on the speed 3rd and 4th.
Sometimes when driving and applying a bit more speed to the pedal, the car will rev up to 5-6K and you would some how expect a change of gear but nothing happens or it is very delays an unexpected.

Would anyone know what the possible problem could be? is mechanical where by the gearbox is failing or is it more ECU type related?

Any ideas on this would be great.

Thanks!

Get the fluid changed, do the revs seem to flare when you accelerate? could be the clutch packs burnt out due to low fluid.

should have mentioned earlier, that the gearbox oil was changed out, but its still not a smooth transition through gears.

Gen - when you say flare how you do mean exactly?

when you accelerate do the revs rise with no increase in speed. If it is banging into gears could be solenoids wearing out.do you know the exact model of the box?

right with you, no it accelerates fine as in when goes through the rev range there is no loss of power. I would say the only time there is and very occasionally is from a stand start there is no immediate power delivery.

unfortunately do not know the exact model, any way for me to find out?

Sounds more like Solenoids. Gearbox code may be in/near spare wheel well on a sticker with all the engine code colour etc.

ok if not that do you think it could be anything else like the control unit?

Could be ECM for Box or Loom going to it.
Have you had the car /gearbox scanned with VCDS?
