Audi Sound System - subwoofer query

    Hi,

I’ve read the various posts on the forum regarding the lack of adjustment for the sub woofer.

My car, a 2018/19 model, comes with the ASS but as others have found it does not have adjustment for the sub woofer. There seems to be conflicting information on this and I’m wondering if anybody ever got a definitive answer from Audi whether or not ASS (not the Bang & Olfsen setup) should have adjustment. I do have the sub woofer in the boot ok but only the standard Treble/Bass/ balance/fader and Sound Effects settings. The latter only allows change from “all” to “front” with no option for “rear.

    Thanks

I think you will be opening some old wounds here!

I only bought my FL A3 (2017 MY) in September, and after reading threads here, came across the missing sub-woofer control issue. Phutters I know has had a long running dialogue with Audi, but has, I think, now admitted defeat. For my own part, I raised the matter with Audi and my local dealer, but the reaction was along the lines that if it doesn’t state in your manual that you have the feature, you have no grounds to complain. My manual does not mention the ASS sub woofer control, so by their reckoning I have no case. Frustratingly, the last manual for the pre facelift A3 shows the sub woofer control for the ASS, and I believe it is mentioned in manuals for later cars than mine. I would suggest you read your manual carefully and see if the control is described. If it is you might just get somewhere.

I must admit, I am surprised that a car as late as yours does not have ASS sub woofer control. I believed it was only the 2017 MY cars which lacked this.

Thanks for your input Mike - I suspect from all I’ve read that I’ll be hitting my head up against a brick wall with Audi.

The manual does mention the various settings though doesn’t specify what Sound System they relate to and is preconditioned that settings are “dependent on the equipment fitted to the vehicle” which I read as a get out clause.

It’s a pity that Audi can’t simply give a yes or no answer to this question to resolve once and for all.

I'm surprised that cars as late as 2018/19 still don't have the subwoofer adjustment - I was under the impression (though that's all it was) that the lack of the sub control was an issue which had affected a certain number of cars beginning with the earliest of the facelift ones, but one which had been rectified since.

    Obviously not.

I've spent a not inconsiderable amount of time trying to get to the bottom of this, and drawn a blank.

For Audi to say definitively that the affected cars should have the adjustment would be a step in the right direction, if only because it would constitute a tacit admission that something is wrong with them.

In all the conversations I've had with customer services, nobody has ever said that in so many words.

The last time I was in contact with them, the person I was dealing with had made (or said he'd made) exhaustive enquiries with the Head Of Subwoofer Adjustment in the technical department, and the result of those enquiries was essentially that yes, there are indeed ASS-equipped cars which do not have the subwoofer adjustment, but that the factory has no plans to provide any remedial updates to rectify the situation.

And that was pretty much that. I'd have taken on the role of championing a better solution if I had the time or if the lack of sub adjustment in my car (a 2017 MY Sportback which I got two years ago) was becoming unbearably annoying.

As it is, I'm afraid I've admitted to myself that, while really irritating, it isn't worth me getting all wound up about it, and I've reluctantly accepted it for what it is.

That doesn't mean that I don't feel a bit cheated by not having something that ought to be there (and not least because the instruction book says it should), because I do.

It's a poor show all round, and if you are minded to pick up the cudgels on behalf of all the other ASS-equipped car owners who are similarly miffed, then I wish you all the luck in the world.

There is one last little thing. Customer services told me on more than one occasion that there had actually been very few complaints to them about this issue. Now they could be fibbing, but if they aren't, I can't understand why more people havent kicked up a fuss about it.

There must be hundreds of owners affected by this, after all, and based on personal experience, since it would appear that a dealership investigating the lack of the sub control will not escalate it internally as a matter of course, surely the next action would be to get on the blower to Audi in Milton Keynes?

Perhaps just pay someone with VCDS to enable it for you. Yes Id be miffed if I had to pay too, but id prefer that to wasting time complaining to Audi (and getting nowhere)

Would that it was so simple, because as far as I'm aware, it isn't.

Now if somebody comes on here and says 'Yes it is!', then I'll be throwing my hat in the air with joy.

As I understand it, a similar problem, and some others, affected the B&O audio systems in the early FL models. Audi eventually fixed this, but it required a new version of MMI firmware. I fear that a similar solution would be required to fix the ASS sub woofer issue in our cars. Which is presumably why Audi are reluctant to do anything about it. £££££

Hi Phutters, having read through the extensive work you have done on trying to resolve this issue and all the input from other owners, I too am surprised that this issue is still featuring in a 2018 build.

I was hoping (foolishly maybe) that later cars would have had this resolved and as such there would be a “fix” for mine and would be interested if there are any 2018 cars out there fitted with ASS that have the subwoofer adjustment?

If not I suspect a lost cause until the replacement model is introduced.

There is a chap on hear who seems to know a fair bit about these, as he does retrofits (installing sub and centre speaker plus activation for those wanting to upgrade the basic system). DJalix

I wonder what would happen when an ASS car update to the firmware with sub control intended for B&O.. Anyone with good enough relationship that they'll be willing to do this? I suspect the sub control would also appear for ASSs...

    I know.

He suggested that he would be prepared to give it a go if he had access to an affected car.

The last I heard he hadn't been able to do this.

If was closer I'd happily volunteer mine.

Can you tell us your MMI firmware version and do you have access to OBD11? Can you post your 5F backup please?

Hmm, that’s very interesting and makes it all the strangeras to why I don’t have it as my car has a build date of September 2018. Me thinks a call to the dealer is looming. I’ll have to try and find my MMI version.

Please let us know how this pans out.

If you get the brush-off (and based on my experience and that of others, there's a good chance you will), don't forget to ring customer services in MK to make them aware of your displeasure.

And while you're on the blower, ask them how many other reports of this issue they have on their system...

I’ve just done mine - it’s menu then scroll to settings then left button then system maintenance.

Here’s mine, will be interesting to see how it compares.

Has anyone checked if this is an issue with the MMI high or the MMI low?
Not sure if the ASS was available to low but thought I mention it before getting your hopes up.
Not trying to be negative but seems almost random some have it and some don’t so maybe it’s related to the MMI low/high.

How do I find which I have? Car has a subwoofer in the boot which works but with no adjustment. The Audi Configurator also confirms that the S-line now comes with ASS. (I have the sd card based navigation).

Sd card based should be the MMI low.
MMI high(tech pack) has the bigger screen and hdd nav.

Great thanks. Appears I have MMI Low though fitted with the large screen. Think this is now standard so obviously Audi mucking about with the specs which may be the issue.

Actually, this is the first time ever anyone confirmed they have ASS in FL WITH sub control, and the B&O sub control fix were hitting US just couple weeks ago, would be interesting to see if it’s the same firmware as the B&O fix that actually fixed it for ASS as well coz in theory, they’re both MMI setting and should applies across both system?

That's an approach I tried, but without success at the time.

Someone else on here who'd had the B&O sub control update carried out was kind enough to let me know where it had been done, and I had a very long but ultimately fruitless conversation with one of that dealership's service people.

The lady there tried so hard, bless her, to see if there might be any information she could give me, including exploring the possibility of exactly what you mentioned. She cross-checked update numbers with VINs and firmware versions and all sorts, just on the off chance that a light would appear at the end of the tunnel, but sadly it didn't.

For her to put in that much effort for a customer who hadn't ever walked in to their showroom, let alone bought a car from them, was really gratifying.

It's exactly how the customer interface should. work, whereas quite a lot of the time you find yourself having a depressingly short conversation with some bloody-minded muppet who simply couldn't care less.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there - as far as I'm aware, the answer to your question is no, it won't.

I too will be very interested in a screenshot of your sound settings as the only difference that I see is the software version number which in mine is blank?? Seems strange.

Come out and go back in to the page and it should show you, I found when I checked after just starting the system it didn’t show the version number so came out and went back in and it came up as shown.

Thanks A3saloon that worked and the plot thickens - my software version is the same 0235 so why do I not have thesubwoofer control?

I called with my local dealer this afternoon and all they could do was say they would check other cars with similar spec to see if they have it and would call me back. I’m not holding my breath.

It would be very useful, and much appreciated, to have a screenshot of your sound settings showing the subwoofer adjustment and armed with both that and the software info I will call back with the dealer for some answers.

I'd like to know too, I've got a MY15 S3 Sportback so should be ASS (it's not B&O) but I'm not sure that I've got a sub under the spare tyre. Don't have settings for it in any case

This only affects FL, on PFL, the sub is sitting ON TOP of the spare tire in SB, if you don't see the sub and no sub control in MMI, then you don't have ASS but the basic system.

Oh right - I thought S3 had ASS as a minimum? Not seen a sub on top of the spare so guess I don't have one :( Is it possible to add one (OEM) later?

Ya, the only difference is adding the sub and the center dash speaker plus some coding, pretty sure @DJAlix can help you with that.

Little bit more to it than coding alone but its totally possible to retrofit the ASS. I do 2 or 3 of these a week :)

DJAlix: do you have any insight as to why the facelift cars with ASS do not have the sub woofer control? More importantly, do you know how to add this function?

The reports in this thread, somewhat surprisingly, suggest that it isn't related to the MMI firmware, so is it something that can be turned on by a VCDS guru? When you retrofit ASS to a facelift car, are you able to also add the sub control?

Ok, so I’ve been back to the dealers and their “technician” has tried other cars with ASS in their pound and states they are all missing subwoofer control so on this basis “ASS equipped cars don’t come with subwoofer adjustment”. Two wrongs don’t necessarily make a right in my mind but in the absence of evidence of a similar speccd car having the adjustment it’s difficult to argue.

I did do an experiment by unplugging the subwoofer and in fairness it does make a considerable difference to the sound and on the basis that I didn’t know the car had ASS fitted when I purchased I suppose I should be happy. Does irk a bit though that I might be missing something (that I may well never adjust anyway) but in the overall scheme of things not worth getting worked up about.

Of course if someone can come up with the evidence, or a fix, then that might be a different t matter!

My evidence is simple, mine's PFL S3 with ASS, I had sub control in MMI and the sound after slight tweaking was pretty damn good, and then, I retrofitted MMI2, VC etc and sub control is gone along with the proper low filtered bass, it is night and days' difference, there is just no way anyone can convince me that the ASS sub right now is working as intended, period.

Audi just didn't bother to fix it for ASS since they have an excuse that it wasn't clearly stated in the owner's manual... But I know for a fact what the ASS is capable of and what I'm getting now with MMI2... Still hoping @A3saloon could post a pic of his sound setting to proof FL ASS can indeed have sub control..

It is rather frustrating to hear that with the subwoofer adjustment enabled ASS was a very good system but that now we are not getting the best out of it.

I think, short of going around Audi dealers trying out the audio systems ourselves, that without independent evidence that the subwoofer adjustment has been restored in latest versions (anyone out there please) we are hitting our heads up against the proverbial brick wall.

I'd consider getting some stout headgear if I were you.

Just because later models have it (if indeed they do), it doesn't necessarily make it any more likely that Audi will do a retrospective update.

Now if everybody. who was affected jumped up and down and caused enough of a ruckus, they just might.
