I installed a 2007 S3 steering rack into my old 2006 A3 with no problems at all.
As I am a consultant to Audi Auastralia, I spent a lot of time discussing this issue with the National Service Manager and was advised that you can install a newer rack but not an older one.
The below is information received from him which should answer your question pretty thoroughly.
I was advised (I ended up finding a wrecked S3) that if I was to buy a new rack, it would be part# 1K2 423 055J to fit my old 2006.

Good info poli. Sadly most of Gen2 steering racks will be replaced at one stage or another i believe. I had a new one installed and it does feel different than the old one. more sensitive and more rd feel. my original one started squeeking at low speeds and turns. I would go back to Audi and insist they pay for at least the part or the labor. this was a faulty part with so many reported issues and breakdowns yet they never did a recall. If they want a list of how many people suffered from this then i reckon we can give them at least 50 names!!

Thanx for the advice poli84. Looks like it should fit. I've already tried audi and they didnt wanna know. I've been offered a 2010 rack for £100 and it's covered just 8k, so i'm just gonna go with that i think. Thanx

New are £930 odd, but be warned, the gen 2/3 required looms aswell, so check with parts department as it shows them a note when they click on the item, all racks are being replaced for gen 3 if they come in for them now.

8P racks are synonymous for issues, especially the creaking noise & the clonk you get on full lock, cant remember if was left or right lock, think was right, hence why audi have untold stocks of these in stores, last time I checked there were 2-300 odd which with parts is fairly unheard of unless its a service item lol.

I would bug audi for goodwill as they know of the issues for sure.

Since mine is now just out of warranty how do you think l would stand if l brought this to their attention and was found to be indeed the rack.

You stand a better chance than most I'd say, they have a 5yr cut off afaik & when pressed on something they're aware is a known issue, that they wont openly admit, they will offer something, but its a bit pick/mix with dealers, as some are just pita's, but some are very understanding & will ask audi uk what they can do.

Mines a Gen 1. l noticed this creaking or it sounded like fluid gurgling some time ago, well over a year. l was told it was the haldex. Or a top mount needing greased. lve no idea how to get access to a top mount.

I just had my 07 s3 rack replaced by audi under warrenty. My mate works there and he said that its a 2010 rack but they have to plug the car into their diagnostics to program it. The ECU apparently talks to HQ in germany and registers the rack with the car. Without this, it apparetly wont work. There are also settings which makes the rack perform differently. He set mine up on an Rs3 program and amazingly it made absolutely no difference to the feel of the steering :sly:
Thought id let you know about the programming incase it is a problem.

Cheers.

Dont believe that crap, thats what they told me too and supposidly followed AUDI instructions and "fixed" the issue by lubing the strut tops only for it to happen again 24 hrs later.

This is what has happened to me too.
I've already at it at Audi with the creaking problem and they dismantled the suspension and lubed the strut tops.
I'm waiting for it to come back again. Although I'm a little worried that if it happens after I've installed the ARB's, they will blame them for the creaking noise.

Just re-read this, the top mount isnt 100% sealed but certainly isnt something that you can whack loads of grease into, if its got road grit in, dust etc which happens often it could over a period of time cause wear on the internals & make them loose, only when I did my suepnsion upgrde did I realise mine wernt in good condition, hence swapped out.

Creaking issue is nothing to do with the struts, typical audi fob-of, its from the rack itself.

Hi, I have problems with servo steering. Most of the times, servo doesn't work and the servo witness on the dashboard is mostly on than off. Is it the power steering box or another thing (like ECU)? I am searching for a SH power steering box, but can't find one with exactly the code that I have on mine. Oddly, I can't find this code in Etka. I will attach a photo so you can see, there are two codes, 1k1 909 143 J and 1k1 909 142L. The A3 is from 09/2003, so it's first generation A3 8P.
Can you tell me which steering box would work? I am also asked if I have 2 or 3 wires to connect it, but I have no idea, now I drive the car in this condition.

I have a rack for sale, of an early BKD aswell.

The part number is actually stamped into the metal somewhere, that is not the rack part number you've shown.

dam heard that creaking on mine when you turn the wheels while stationary. looks like i be going to audi to get ripped of aswell my car is 2005 way out of warranty only 30k on clock but i guess they will still say wear and tear

Mine started making the same gurgling noise last week, and I've got a squeak when turning at low speed. Me thinks the recon'd rack I got this time last year is goosed:applaus:

Sorry for bringing an old thread back to life, but can anyone help me, I'm trying to find a part number for a steering rack on a 2010 s3 cdla , can anyone help me cheers

Does anyone know the part numbers for a 2004 2.0 tdi sport steering rack and control module?

Really need them asap. Thanks guys.

Looking for £200, I paid £250 + postage of £35, the can had only done around 8-9,000 miles , was like new, cheers

hiya, did you ever sell that steering rack? think ive just got the same problem, i jumped into my 2.0 fsi turned it on and a red steering wheel popped up and the steering has gone super heavy

Dragging up an old post!

I need to replace my steering rack on S3 8p 2009. I have bought a reconditions rack and am now looking to swap them over.

Has anyone ever swapped them over themselves? It doesnt look too complicated.

Disconnect steering column from inside the footwell
Disconnect cabling etc from rack
disconnect track rods from both ends.
take out all subframe bolts
allow subfame to swing down
and pull the old rack out.

Do the opposite to install the new one?

Is it as simple as this?

I know it will need to be coded and calibrated but i was planning to take it to the audi specialist after ive fitted it for them to do this.

IS it this easy or not?

You can identify the steering rack Generation fitted to the car by looking at various fitting points.
I wrote an article on my website about identifying them - http://andrewhope.co.uk/automotive/steering-rack-identification.html
This is specific to VW Golf, but the platforms are similar so principles should be the same

Easiest option is to ring dealership, they can tell you based on registration.

GEN1/2 racks can be interchanged, I don't think they need any modification off-hand, I believe if you fit a GEN3 rack you may need to purchase additional parts for the subframe, and you need a new wiring harness. The sensor (G269 IIRC) is built directly into the rack itself.
