Hi All,

Audi S3 8P BHZ 68K 2007

I've noticed that a whine noise has developed which comes from the front end, only when I'm in 5th gear and can be heard from 2K RPM of which it increases as I accelerate.

It doesn't happen in any other gears just 5th and from what I've seen it's most likely the gearbox which is just great.

Any ideas which of the following will cure it and the cost related please? New gearbox oil, synchros or transfer case.

Cheers.

Synchro mate, common thing.

Thanks mate, do you know roughly how much we're talking?

Sorry, I meant shaft and bearings, was typing quickly. No idea about the costs though.

No worries so it's shaft and bearings, is there anything more specific like is it the input shaft etc? Apologies as my gearbox knowledge is next to none, also is replacing these a big job?

Did you have the whine before fitting the new clutch?
It could get costly if it's gearbox off job. Get it inspected first.

No it only started happening Sunday evening after a good few hours of spirited driving.

Ok so the best thing to do is to take it to Storm and explain the situation then, they're just ****** expensive.

or turn the radio volume up:welcoming:

Haha, how long can/should this be left? As I really don't have the funds at the moment and imagine it's going to be £400+ bill.

as long as you have good music on your radio.
just joking.
smf setups tend to make all kind of noises. so get someone from storm to try it and see what they say.
long shot but any difference with aircon on off?

:tearsofjoy:
I wish those were tears of laughter! The amount I've had to spend on repairs (ones you wouldn't expect) on this car is just a joke now to be honest, I don't rate Audi as highly as I used to..

The chatter is now more pronounced compared to when it was first fitted but that's fine as it's expected. It's done 1.8K and I can now also hear the chatter in gears which gets quicker with the revs up to 3K RPM where it disappears which again I never used to hear before.

I need to get a braided clutch line fitted because of a 1st gear issue but it's just this whining in 5th which I'm concerned about. Will try the aircon later, it's currently always been on since fitment.

i feel your pain...just got my car back after 2+ months.

unfortunately unexpected fixes.

Harry, get STA to check it out - they can replace any bearing you need while there.

Shame to hear mate, seems like it doesn't matter how well you treat these it's just luck of the draw if you get a load of shi1 to go wrong which you wouldn't expect to..

Cheers mate that's STA in Aylesbury I take, I notice that their website references automatics a lot but guess they will still know enough about manuals?

Yes, very knowledgeable guys, so worth giving them a call. They specialise in automatics and DSG boxes, but worth asking if they can handle manuals - there is not much different there to be fair.
