Audi rear shocks clunking sound (Magnetic ride)

Hi all,

Hoping if someone could help me I've previously bought an approved used audi s3 with magnetic ride, I've had it now for 5 months and I've noticed this clunking sound in the back when i drive over speed humps at a steady speed of about 15 to 20 mph and sometimes even slower (depending on the hump), from the sound and how the car reacts as it bounces i can only assume its the rear shock absorbers... but i have magnetic ride could this mean something else or has the magnetic ride decide to break on me?

Also driving round corners at a speed trying to enjoy the driving characteristics i can feel the car rolling!

Ive got it booked in at Audi to check it out since its got a 12month warranty, could anyone give me a heads up on what it could possibly be?

Ive managed to find the TSB for it however reading about TSB's it doesn't mean the manufacture in this case AUDI will pay for it, do you know if it is one that they will pay for?

Finger crossed they do as i don't fancy paying it when its under warranty also, seems pointless having a warranty.

The solution should be to lubricate some parts of the suspension.

I have the same problem but Audi can't recreate the noise when they take the car for a test run, so I can't tell you if a lubrication is the definitive solution.

One note though, the TPI I have written in the thread is for the pre-facelift and not the facelift as I initially thought.

This TSB is most likely for the pre-facelift and not facelift since it's dated 26-08-2016. I almost got my hope up because I haven't seen any TPI or TSB for the facelift yet even tough more and more are describing the same noise from their magnetic ride.

I don't think it's the exact same issue since my car i the facelifted version. Audi should be able to fix my problem only by lubricating some parts but I really don't want them to do something they don't know anything about. The mechanics looked like big questions marks when I asked them about the issue on the pre-facelift which is a known/recognised issue so of course they didn't knew anything about the facelift issue and couldn't find anything in their system about it. And if it isn't in the system the problem doesn't exist.....

Hey not sure if you've got your problem fixed since this is an old feed but i just recently got my front wishbone bushes changed which made a scraping noise at the front and it just echoed through the cabin.

Thought to let you know if you hadn't got it fixed. incase it was a similar issue

Cheers mate and thanks for the update. It has got worse especially with the cold weather (not sure why it would be related but it is). I have to book in the car with Audi to get the top mounts replaced, which is what they identified as an 'issue'. So, did your start happening after the wishbone chnage or it was fixed after replacing them.

So not quite the same as your problem, but it would be interesting if your sound still occurs after the replacement of the top mounts.

Does your car bounce a lot or bottom out when you go over bumps?

My problem is only on the fronts and both sides. I only started hearing it after replacing the tyres. It wasn't there before that. It is strange but ...

I don't have any issues at the back, it doesn't bounce or bottom out at all. Just that annoying cluncking going over bumps

I got my magride recalibrated at Audi (under warranty with me telling them that if they wanted to get rid of me they had to recalibrate the car ) and that made a huge change. I don't know how they measured the values but it can be discussed how well they did they job, although it's still night and day between stock settings and this.

I'm going to get my car lowered at spring time and then I will get it done remotely by @DJAlix and with my own critical measuring tape I'm really looking forward to this because with Eibach Pro-Kit and the car prober calibrated I'm sure I'll get the car to handle as a real hothatch.

Stock settings:
LF: 371mm
RF: 370mm
LR: 360mm
RR: 359mm

My measurement:
LF: 361mm
RF: 361mm
LR: 345mm
RR: 346mm

Audi recalibrated settings:
LF: 365mm
RF: 361mm
LR: 346mm
RR: 356mm (This measurement annoys me, because I have measured it to be 346mm 5 times which makes me think it's a typo)


All these settings can be found through OBDeleven. I told Audi that the rear was 15mm(!) off and showed the settings on my phone, suddenly everything changed and they agreed to do the recalibration. I had complained about noisy magride 3 times prior to this.

Well lets hope the change of the top mounts fix it, cause it may be just a coincidence that it stated after you changed your tyres i dunno.

i never knew until recently that MAG-Ride needs recalibrating, has that made a difference on the ride quality itself cause I'm wanting to lower my car also but noticed my rear sits a little lower that the front and thats when i thought it may need recalibrating, although I've fallen out with my local audi dealership i might give them a call quickly cause my warranty runs out in the new year.

So are the measurements, measured from the centre of the wheel upto the wheel arch?

and why are the measurements of each wheel different i thought the front would be the same and the rear would be the same didn't think it would be all individual?

After you change the springs to the Eibach you should recalibrate them again right?

I'm from Denmark so stop complaining! @DJAlix is able to do remote coding where you first buy the interface/dongle (costs less than £100 + shipping) from him and then pay for the coding you want - so less than £150 all in all to transform the handling of the car, I think it's fair. After you change the springs to the Eibach you should recalibrate them again right?

The rear sits a little lower from stock, that's why I'm going for the Eibach Pro-Kit, this will lower a magride car around 20mm front and 10mm back, it's a subtle drop but combined with the much needed recalibration it will make a major difference.

The recalibration I got on stock magride made a markable difference. Comfort mode is now more comfortable and Dynamic is less harsh but more responsive, if that makes sense...

The difference of the corners are because you can't make a setup like this 100% similar, a 1-3mm difference are to be expected but not 10mm as my workshop measured it to be.

And yes after you change the springs it's highly recommended to make a recalibration. I could feel the difference of 15mm so adding additional 10-20mm to that would make the magride even more confused and when you got a system like this it's just a pity if you don't get it recalibrated.

Measure your centre cap in mm and divide by two. Measure from the top of your centre cap to the bottom of your wheel arch.

Add both your figures together example:

60/2=30 + 305 = 335.
