Audi Extended warranty - wtf!

Ok so just got off the phone following an online quote for an extended warranty. Was amazed at how expensive it is and following the phone call how limited it is. For my A3 1.6tdi, if i want "all component cover", £0 excess and over 15k miles then its £1018 per year! Even the cheapest cover with "named components", £250 excess was coming in at £488 per year! its coming up to 3yrs old and really wanted to continue the warranty as it has been... I like the peace of mind of going through Audi and would like the full 2yrs extra so i have warranty until its 5yrs old. However the lady on the phone told me prices aren't negotiable, no discount if i pay 2yrs upfront, aren't transferable to new owners, and if i make a claim then non cancelable. wtf! Non transferable?? how is this right? i was told if i sell the car then the policy is cancelled with no refund! a warranty surely stays with the item doesn't it?

Any views on peoples experiences with extended warranties would be great & maybe other options that are worthwhile pursuing....

My car is out of warranty soon too, got similar price to you from Audi (which considering mine is an S3 STronic makes your quote even more rubbish).

That's far too much to pay, and I wouldn't trust a 3rd party one, so I toyed with the idea of changing it - that seems far too expensive and I'm not super keen on the facelift, and there isn't much else I like and can afford.

Sooooo.... currently I'm at the "F-it, I'll keep it and if it blows up I'll have to smash the credit card" stage.

Which will be fine until it actually blows up.

Extended warranties in general are simply not worth it. You're much better off putting that £1018/year into a savings account as an emergency repairs fund, should you ever need it. There will also always be caveats in the contract that will end up requiring you to pay more, even if something is covered by the extended warranty.

That's ridiculous.
It was about £30 - £40pm with VW for the top level of cover for my Golf R in 2014....and I transferred it to the new owner.

As said above.....covering emissions costs.

That sounds ridiculous, putting £100/month away is far more sensible.
When I ordered my S3 in 2014 the 2 year extension to make it 5yrs cost £500 (ish) I think which I took just in case I kept it. That "factory" extended warranty is a continuation of manufacturers warranty without additional exceptions to the standard warranty.

Mine lives in France and you only get 2 years when you buy the car new but the extension costs are nothing like the quote, can you verify the numbers on Audi's website?

When I bought my S3 I paid £500 to make it five years . Worth every penny when you think how expensive any faults cost .
When it is five years old will consider trade in or self insure and find performance specialist garage to look after it .

I am paying £245 to extend the warranty on my new A3 from 3 years to 4 years through Audi which I think is not too bad. That works out less than I have been quoted by other 'warranty' companies. It will allow me to keep the car for another year beyond the normal 3 years warranty with worrying about any expensive repairs.

I hate to say it, but this is an area where BMW far outshines Audi/VAG. Their extended warranties are far more palatable price wise, and they offer a rolling monthly contract if that's your bag.

Difference here is that mine runs out in a month so I'm essentially upgrading as it wasnt taken out at time of purchase. costs are seemingly over 3x the amount compared to if i had bought it when new (2nd owner so couldn't!) will go in to the extended warranty site again and take a screenshot of various options. I would love to go for it but just cant justify £1k a year for it. At £488 per year i also don't see the point in going for it if its "named parts" only with £250 excess and limited mileage.

I got extended warranty currently on my A4 and it cost me around 345 pounds fully comp, 250 excess, this was last July. I was lucky and did it a before Audi took them over. I think it was Mondial insurance who did them previously.

He said Audi are taking back all extended warranties and they are no longer going though them. He said it would be a lot more expensive going through Audi.

Glad I took the 4 year extension at 245 pounds on my upcoming S3 now!

The Audi one is great value if you take it when you buy the car and must make it more sellable. Seems to be one of the few which cover most components but I have a feeling it may tie you into Audi servicing (may be wrong though). I have only had to claim once on an extended warranty for failed pixels on an older style DIS but they coughed up for the full amount.

Here are the details. Its for a 1.6tdi though so if your car is spec above then expect more maybe. I got the lowest figure wrong. its actually £388 for "named parts" cover but with £250 excess and 10k limited mileage. I would never go for 10k limited as i do around 20k so cheapest for me would be the £488 figure i mentioned in my 1st post. And don't forget these are ANNUAL prices! x2 to increase it to the 5yr age mark!

So going off the S3 figures that S32B quoted a new S3 will cost you £545 extra to have the extra 2yrs warranty if bought at time of purchase(making it 5yrs warranty and 90k miles max). My bog standard A3 diesel will cost me £2036 to get the same amount of cover, but admittedly with no mileage cover but they do stipulate it has to be under 100k miles! Nice one Audi! An extra £1491 just cos the option wasnt ticked at time of purchase! prob more actually as that is comparing S3 to A3! sigh!

By the way, any of you can try this on their web page. Go to eBay or Auto trader and pick a car identical to yours but over 3yrs old. Then input the reg number on this site.... Oh and apparently according to Audi customer service there is no other way to get quotes or cover. this website is it!

Warranty direct will do it if under 120k, so should be good for your motor.

I have just taken out a 2 year extended warranty with Belfast Audi on my S3 S-Tronic with 38000 on the clock. It cost &685 and is transferable to a new owner. Where they get me is the car MUST be serviced by Audi, not just with genuine parts.

One thing to consider if you don't mind taking the gamble......
Audi Goodwill Gesture......If you keep it maintained at your dealership or any Audi garage the chances are if something major does go 'pop' then you will get a contribution from Audi Uk......Like I said at the beginning a gamble..

It was £685 for the two years. The excess is £60 on each claim and there is no limit on warranty but car must be serviced buy Audi within 21 days or 1000 miles of notification.

Click4warranty seem very good for the price. £606 for their 5 star cover for 36months. They even cover wear & tear items. Does anyone have any experience with this or other warranty companies? I'm sceptical but i guess some cover is better than none. I wonder east the chances of an A3 diesel going bang are! prob 1st day out of warranty knowing my luck!!

your deal sounds good Gingerone, wish they would price compare on these sorts of things. would benefit quite a few people if we could question why 1 price is different to the other.

As others have said, keep your money and just put some away each month to cover any potential cost. Let's be honest what's going to happen to a 3 year old 1.6 tdi.

For me it was much cheaper as an extension to the factory warranty. Doing all component, 15k, £0 excess on the website comes in a £2700. I paid £1200.

I knew someone who worked for one of the big accounting firms and remember an amusing tale from the audit of a car warranty company.

One of the audit tests was to undertake a review of some of the claims that had not been paid. The audit team asked for the file of rejected claims and someone eventually returned with a lever arch file stuffed full with paperwork - that's 'A' they announced with the inference that there were numerous other files covering the other letters of the alphabet!

I'm sure that there are people who have been grateful they had a policy in place, and been saved from significant costs, but since I heard that story I have never considered taking out a warranty.

I understand the peace of mind. But the first two years after the warranty runs out if you have full Audi service history then 9/10 Audi will contribute a lot towards a potential repair. The keyword for me here is potential. I don't like giving people money for free though. That and the fact I like taking risks

I just had an injector go on my 3 year, 3 month old 1.6TDI VW Caddy go, and other complications, luckily i bought it from a VW dealer 2nd hand, so it has warranty until July 2017. Would of been a repair bill of around £900 smackers, thank god for warranty, and i will be looking to take out a policy afterwards.

As a Gap provider they are reckoned to be one of the better alternatives to dealer cover.

I thought this with my Porsche. I bought the car new and in year 4 I decided I didn't need to pay their £1200 a year warranty. After all nothing big would go wrong would it? Maybe a few hundred for this and that? 6 months later I started the engine in the garage and it imploded due to a design flaw.

If you can afford to buy a new porker then £7600 is small change in my book.
