Hi

I have the normal volume issue on my Concert, is there another head unit in the Audi range that'd serve as an upgrade and fit straight in? For example, could I use the later Concert head unit that has the single CD slot, rather than tape, but still have my autochanger in the boot too?

Concert II with the single CD will work, and your CD changer will be fine! Only thing is make sure it comes out from the same model car, otherwise the front fascia is different.
