I have noticed for the past 4 months an oil smell when sitting in traffic in D with my foot on the brake however if i shift it into N it seems to stop. It happened maybe once every 2 weeks. I've had it at my normal mechanic and an audi specialist and neither could find any problem or leaks and the oil levels are all perfect. As off 2 weeks ago I've noticed it more often however the car also shuttered for about 2 seconds when taking off from a stand still and there was a kind if rattling noise. Its fine it a couple of times since. I've had it back out at my mechanic and again everything is fine and no signs of a leak. He even plugged the gearbox in with no fault codes showing. The only thing he can think off is the clutches going in the gearbox but that's only an educated guess at this point. Does anyone have any idea before I take it to the audi specialist and he bends me over.

update the gearbox and do a calibration

Whata the odds that this could be a fix? If it's a slime chance I'd rather get shot of the car than keep throwing money at it

50% chance. Audi releases a lot of updates for the gearboxes. I update them a couple of times a week :)

Is this possible to do at home? My mate did say he did the calibration after the gearbox was serviced 10k miles ago I'm assuming he would have done the update to

If you have Vcp or odis engineering then you can update it yourself. Do you your current software version of your gearbox? Should start with 4G and then a number. You can check it with Vcds, vcp or obd11

I can get that for you in the morning. Thanks for the help hopefully it's not as serious as I'm thinking but it's not looking great

As above, a gearbox calibration is advisable, if update is available then dealer will calibrate as part of.

Sorry folks havnt had a chance to plug the car in today will hopefully get at that after dinner but I was talking to my local audi specialist about doing the update and calibrate and he says he can do it be he is very against doing it as he says it's not a good idea to do so if there is an issue with the gearbox. I personally think he is talking rubbish and just wants to stroke me out of money when it might not be needed but what's your take on this

If you have no major errors in your gearbox then it's rubbish talk :)

Other than the oil smell and the shuttering when taking off from the standstill which has happened 4 times in the past 6 weeks both these things seem to happen after the car have been driven for 30mins or more. Not sure if this is something major or not

I meant software errors in the gearbox software.

I had a 5 minute look but didn't come up with anything I have one of them obdeleven pro jobs that connect to your phone and couldn't work out how to get the software version

Open the Gearbox module and then Information

The latest version for that number is version 006. What's yours?

Do you also have your Engine softwareversion? Because it is advisable that the engine software must also be updated when updating the gearbox.

Engine software number is 4G0907401f version 0004

No doubt the MMI is in need of updating to along with maps and such. It just seems very hard to find anyone around me willing to do it

Latest engine software is 007. Both gearbox and engine has to be updated to the last version. Then check if the problem is gone or not.

This has intrigued me. I wasn't even aware there was software updates for gearboxes.

So had the update and calibration Carrie's out yesterday with no luck. The car will lurk forward from a standstill sometimes and when it get warm the odd time it will shudder pretty bad taking off. Looks like I'm in for a massive bill to try and sort a car that's been serviced regularly with only 80k miles

80 k ?
My Gearbox only had 37 k on it when the Mechtronics box spat the dummy out, and a speacalist quoted £4k to fix it.
God knows what Audi would have said.
Got it done for £1400 in the end from a Gearbox place.
Good luck with yours.

Such a shame. Love the car and the gearbox is fantastic when it's working right. Dont see myself hanging on to it mich longer with the amount if reports of this happening

Update on the car. Today it brought up the gearbox malfunction you can continue driving and only goes into 2nd and 4th now. No manual mode and even after turning it off and leaving it go for an hour it pop back up 10 secs after turning car on

Sounds like the Mechronics box. Its fixable. See my earlier post. Recon unit fitted and programmed £1400 ish with 12 month warranty.
