Bought private approx 4 years ago
Only local garage services since 2011 (also due)
Few weeks ago, EML came on for approx few days then went off again
I am from Bolton

Car started stalling (not normal) then really struggled to get uphill, managed to get to local garage who has had someone more experienced look at it, both think it is timing chain and possibly further serious problems with engine (he mentioned knocking and misfiring)

Not something he can fix, both local indy audi specialists have advised go to dealer. There is another indy (fixmyengine) but earliest availability is July.

Have booked in with audi dealer for diagnostics next week (£65) and likely they will want to book a separate secondary diagnostic (£1000s?) and then whatever to sort.

With it being a known fault am i likely to get any goodwill? (I appreciate private sale and no dealer service history since 2011)

Is it going to be expensive and should i stick to dealer/ go to fixmyengine?

1.8 with a timing chain? I doubt it very much. Buy yourself a code reader for the obd port and see what that tells you. Far too early to be talking about scrapping it. That's crazy.

I have a 1.8 tfsi and that's a chain

Hi, so what happened in the end? did you get it repaired? I'm only asking because my 1.4tfsi developed a problem last weekend... so basically when i turn the car on a cold start I hear a loud rattling towards the front of the engine. It only lasts for 1-2 seconds and then it's ok, no sounds during driving.
I turn the car off immediately then on and nothing can be heard.

Another thing, it seems to be completely random when it happens, like this morning woke up, turned the car on and nothing... completely normal.

anyway I called the local Bosch approved garage who have previously worked on the car, book a full service since it's due and tell him I got a rattling noise, immediately he asked if its a 1.4 and i said yes. Then he says he's got one in the garage right now that they are working on, 1.4 A3, they found it to be the timing chain. So I ask how much will it cost... £1300! (not sure if that includes labour but i would imagine so?), but he did say it could also be oil getting into the engine so they will check it during the service. Only when he told me about the timing chain I googled around and yep... in 1.4's it's a common fault :( I am so gutted as it's been working fine. I've read here and other forums that it could also be the tensioner but I can imagine the amount of work to be the same time.

I thought with the money I will save with a 1.4 rather than buying a 1.6 etc would be good and probably now end up paying £1000+ to fix it... sigh...

Can anyone verify the cost of changing the timing chain?, I'll see what the garage says before I go shopping for quotes...
